I don't think grease would help. I think the springs need to be tighter

The load cover should be under considerable spring pressure when it's in place and shouldn't be able to rattle. Or do you mean the cassette is rattling in its holders when the cover is retracted into the cassette?

These things always rattle. On my last 2 Tourings it was simply the rolled up cover not being a tight fit in the brackets. Never been in an E30 Touring that didn't rattle like mad in the back - been in a few...

I think it is rattling where it mounts into the sprung brackets at either side. If I grab it, there is plenty of fore and aft movement, though the actual brackets are well fixed.

Sure it isn't the seats? If you lower the seats are the little brass poles that the seats clip onto loose?

Like Brian says it shouldn't actually be able to rattle at that point...

Well I drove home with the shelf on the back seat, and no rattles.

I've never heard one rattle on a touring! There are springs in the mounting brackets, which I presume stop them rattling. Whether there's anything adjustable here I don't know, as I've never had a rattle.
Nothing in a BMW should rattle, full stop! If it does, something's not been adjusted properly.

My Touring doesn't rattle. Maybe the brackets that hold the cassette are broken, one of mine is, on the top bit that stops the cover lifting out of the bracket. Or the springs have sprung. If shaking just the cassette doesn't cause a rattle, I can only suggest put new clips on. Especially if the cassette rattles in the brackets.
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring

I've had 3 Tourings that rattle. My brothers rattle. All from the back. The cars are old and it happens. Let's not get it twisted, I love the brand but if shit rattles hey - what can I say?

My CoupÃ…a and my brothers Saloon are solid as granite.

! have six tourings, and not one of them rattles! BMW do not do old cars. Everything should fit and work (except the headlamp levelers) just as it did when it left the factory.
Any rattles are down to poor/incompetent maintenance.

Sucking eggs, but are you sure that the load cover is properly snapped into place? It can take some effort.. You need to twist it to lock it in. The first few times I tried it I didn't have it locked in, and I only locked it properly when I got pi%%ed off at it :)

(ignore me if you've tried this).
