I have changed the plugs and leads and tested the coil and it is working.
where does the coil pick its earth up from?
(like the points in an old distributor)

+ side of coil is connected to 12V+ via the ignition switch. Coil is fired by the - terminal being earthed by a transistor in the engine ECU.
This transistor is triggered, via some electronics, by the crank position sensor which is a small aluminium cylinder on a bracket on the exhaust side of the engine held near the large toothed wheel at the front of the engine.
Its lead runs across the front of the engine to a connector on a bracket under the diagnostic socket.
Failure of the CPS is fairly common.

Are the CPS's expensive, and are they the same between an M42 and an M20?
I'm currently trying to diagnose a problem with my 318is. Bloody thing.
