Hi - Have 325i 1986 - completely original and in good nick - have owned for 15 years. Suddenly lack of power - wont rev above 3000 when driving. Any ideas?

Check the electric plug that connects to it and also check the pipe from the AFM for any splits on the underside.

I have a spare afm if the above doesnt work.

Had a go this evening - here's what I did.

Replaced all six sparkplugs - just in case.

Removed air filter - sprayed carb cleaner up into the AFM whilst engine was running and also into the idle valve.

DID'NT replace air filter - although it didn't look very dirty - car has been standing for 4 months. Left it out then -
Took for a spin
WOOOOOAAAHH - this is how i remembered car years ago.

Then I replaced original air filter, car was slightly better than before - but still sluggish under power,

Tommorrow off the Halfords for new air filter - I'll report back.

THANKS FOR TIPS GENTLEMEN

May I suggest you pay a little more attention to routine servicing in future! When you said "completely original" in the OP, I didn't realise you were including the filter element!

I'm not that silly - car has been used off and on - but filter was changed last year - only done about 500 miles - but has been sitting out since - the last thing I thought it would be was the filter!!
Car has been regularly serviced by a BMW specialist.

BTW it is original and in overall good condition. Slight rust problem to tackle quickly.
Original bottle top wheels in perfect condition, even though not garaged for 14 years.

Love it....
