whats that simon? could one in theory get a pair of second hand lights from a newer car and rip out the xenons and retro fit to the e30 lamps? they'd need different power aswell i presume...
Is therre a right up on this conversion or is it the 200 odd pound from zone shop ony?

Liam i'm not sure if the zone shop is the conversion off the old forum or a aftermarket kit.

Yes it's a conversion of parts from newer cars so proper bulbs and ballasts etc

i'm not sure i'm allowed to spill the beans on how to do it!

there are two ways i know of

xenons from a BMW X5 or audi TT

the wiring is not too difficult

mounting the ballasts

modifiy the back of the headlamp, eg dremel! the xenon bulbs are huge. Literally 5 times the size of a e30 halo bulb. This is the worst part of the hole job but not to bad imo

Thats the jist. I've never done a conversion from start to finish but i have minced about with mine enough times taking them off my car and fitting them onto the next one

i'll say it again the hid kits are crap!

why piss about when for similar money u can have something proper that doesn't break and u can see about 4 times as far compared to standard lights.

f**k all that blue sh!te aswell if u ask me! it's all about seeing where u are going in the dark. I did it so i could drive quicker!

My xenons look nice and blue and are no where near 8000k

Demlotcrew's conversion is easily the best I have ever seen.

The kits from ebay are .....well.....I have to agree with Simon.

The ones on the Zone Shop are not bad, TUV approved and are on my M5 and work very well. However, they are no way as good as what Andrew does.

I got a set from a company in the UK (not sure I'm allowed to post the name of it)

Anyhow they offered a warranty on them, took me about 1hr to fit them to a E36. Shouldn't imagine it'll take any longer to fit to an E30.

Plus the bulbs were detachable from wiring so modding the backs of the headlights needed just a small drill hole to pass the rubber grommet and wire through. Mounted the ballasts in a safer watertight place, cut into my existing earth and power cable, soldered together and switched em on.

HID's for Ԛ£200. Bargain.

Edit - Just scouring my receipts they were Ԛ£230 and a lifetime warranty.

when i had an e30, i put a xenon kit 6500K, while it was an improvement, i would definately say that the projector needs to be changed to get the best out of it, i would recommend not going over 6000K if you want the conversion to be functional. Demlots beam is virutally OEM, and is worth the extra effort. Over 6000K is just a complete waste of time and money, leave it for show days, since you can buy the capsules separately, i have seen some crap quality now because so many out there.

So do the conversions like Demlots and the like give you xenon dipped and main with the motorized flap like modern bi-xenons?

What about the conversion kits from places like C A Automotive, which seem like a well made kit, but very retro fit as opposed to OEM.

Love xenons, but deliberating on the best option for my baby

U don't need xenon mainbeam. The oe setup is excellent.

Oops, sorry, did I just swear?! lol

Always preferred a factory approach, that why I'm really interested in this thread and getting more info on some of the conversions that can be done.

The only xenons I've got experience of using are newish cars from work which have bi-xenons with the motorised flap in them. I hear what you (and others) say about xenon dipped being all you'll ever need, but can't get my head around the idea that xenon main beam isn't necessary or desirable. I know main beam isn't any brighter than dipped but the different aim means that you will always see further, so surely xenon main beam would be the ultimate?

I'm genuinely not doubting what you are saying, just trying to get a better understanding of the issues invloved :D

Mark the problem is that the E30 low beam light just isnt large enough to accommodate a bixenon projector.

Otherwise its very possible, the electrics would be easy to wire up.

Thanks for explaining it all, incidentally, how much is this dogs bollocks conversion that you do? Presumably it can be applied to smoked Hellas? Sounds like the kind of quality that I'm after.
