chandlesr in hailsham were the same when i was over there last! the parts bloke rushed back into the building and came back with all the mechanics and most of the staff!
the amusing bit with mine is that as it's not all clean and polished, it's not immediately obvious!
euan, welcome to the 'zone mate! start yourself a thread and keep it though your conversion and you'll get all the help you need! have a search through the posts in this area of the forum as a lot of us have done this recently and there is a wealth of knowledge on here!

Thanks euan!euan wrote:just read this from start to finish what a great conversion and a great end result well done matey ill be in the same position soon when i start my c reg 735 into my f reg 318
It's not the most spectacular conversion on here but for the money I suspect one of the most effective!
It's a shame I cocked up with the pictures on the thread - I didn't realise that if I deleted a pic out of my photobucket it dissappeared from the thread too!
Like Gareth said dude, start a new topic so we can all follow / help out with the conversion!

I look forward to seeing that euan!
Well, I hate to boast but I've had a good day today!
Got an email at work just before lunch telling us all that as the company has done so well this year (must be because I've worked sooo hard!) we are getting a bonus in november's pay.
And it's my birthday in a couple of weeks!
I spent my bonus and (predicted
) birthday dosh within an hour and ordered a set of H&R anti-roll bars!
I can't wait to get them!
I've also ordered poly bushes for rear beam, trailing arms and off-set ones for front wishbones, a genuine Z3M diff mounting bush, new track rod ends, wishbones, front and rear anti-roll bar links and strut top bearings!
My 140 000 mile chassis will be like new! Only better!!!
And as I've got next week off work, I've got my work cut out!
I'll probably freeze lying on the road for days too!
I'm sure there will be tales to tell, and pictures to post very soon when I have rear axle out and all the front gubbins apart!
Wish me luck (as if I haven't had some already) as I'll probably need some more!

ANOTHER week playing with a BMW!!!
I just hope it's not raining as I'll be doing it on the road!
I'm also going to drop the fuel tank and replace all my brake pipes as they were commented on on the M.O.T. , and they don't look too good!
Plus whatever else I find while I'm under there!

lucky git lol wish i had a week of work and a bonus i had a wierd day today got a whopping 38p an hour rise then stuffed brand new works transit into back of a mini cooper oh well im home now in one piece so not too bad
Glad your'e ok euan!
A rise is better than no rise!
I had an interesting day today! (Again!).
The last couple of (very cold) days I've had a strange whining noise coming from my engine which has gone away after a couple of miles driving. It was engine speed related so I thought maybe a belt was a little slack and when it got warm it was ok, or something like that.
Tonight though on my way home from work the noise didn't go away, and at a set of trafic lights near home the revs kept dropping and picking up again. Still the whining noise was there.
By the time I got home a few miles later it was popping and banging out the exhaust and running VERY rough!
I coasted on to the driveway and it stalled, and wouldn't re-start.
I checked all visual stuff and tried the engine again. It started and the whine was coming from the front of the engine. I thought the worst and decided to take a look inside the timing cover, so... radiator out, dizzy cap off, thermostat housing off and top timing cover off. All looked well, then I noticed the crank sensor had a strange look to it.
The nut holding the crank sensor bracket had come loose and the sensor was resting on the trigger wheel, mangling the sensor!
Lucky I had a spare sensor to get me going!
I thought this time I'll put a locking nut on the stud holding the bracket on.
And guess what, it wound the stud further into the bracket and then stripped it's thread!
Managed to clean it up though and just use a normal nut and loads of Loctite!
Then the thermostat fell out of it's housing and dumped half a pint or so of coolant straight down the lower timing cover and into the sump!
Would have been on the road again but need to get a gallon and a bit of oil and change it, only changed it last weekend too!
My mate next door giving me a lift to work tomorrow!
The joys of motoring!

Glad It's not just me Andy!
Gareth, I'm sure my engine does love weekly oil changes - but I don't! Gets a bit expensive!
Got some oil today (delivered to work
) and changed that tonight and bled the cooling system - again! Getting quite good at that now though!
Hope it's ok for it's journey from Kent to Devon on Sunday!!

I hope you get some dry days mate as you are going to be a while fitting that lot !
Are you going from a cone filter to an M30 air box ?

I plan to drop the diff, rear beam anf fuel tank.
Change all bushes and brake pipes and fit my last two Goodridge flexi hoses (the ones that are almost above the tank). Easy peasy!
Then re-do all the front stuff.
After reading a couple of air filter tests that someone posted on here where the standard air box with genuine (Mahle) filter element came out best for power I thought I'd try both when I eventually get my car on a dyno.
The K&N cone filter looks faster

I'm looking foward to get that twin TB on so i can use a standard air box again, cone filters on M30's are always going to be comprimized by the heat off the exhaust manifold, not much of a problem once rolling though because of the air flow under the bonnet.DRIFTBOY wrote: After reading a couple of air filter tests that someone posted on here where the standard air box with genuine (Mahle) filter element came out best for power I thought I'd try both when I eventually get my car on a dyno.
The K&N cone filter looks faster, but maybe it isn't! ? We'll see.
I got better times at the pod when there was less ques and/or giving it a short break inbetween runs.

Well, I had quite a productive week off!
I had the rear axle out and replaced loads of stuff!

Z3M diff bush.

Poly beam and trailing arm bushes.

New metal and Goodridge flexi brake pipes.
I also fitted new handbrake shoes which made a surprisingly good difference!
There was lots of swearing, tool throwing, bloody knuckles, cold, wet and dark driveway, increased debt, a disinterested girlfriend and aching limbs to deal with!
But I didn't have to drop the fuel tank down as I thought, the rear brake pipes just loop over the top of it and back again!
Just waiting for my H&R anti-roll bar kit to start on the front now!
I haven't properly road tested the car yet but there are no clonks or bangs so seems good so far!

My dad's garage is only just wide enough to get a car in and squeeze out the door! It's rubbish!
I'm always on a t him to get a double garage built!

Thanks dude!professormatt wrote:just read the full post, intresting stuff, how you getting on with the car any updates?
That must have taken you a while!
I've just got in from the driveway again, just fitted (but not connected) my rear H&R anti roll bar and new (thicker) rear spring pads, just to take the back end up a few milimeters, which it has.
I have read on here that the flange on the trailing arms bend easily or even break with beefier roll bars on so I made up a couple of reinforcments which I hope to have welded on in the next few days. Then I can fit my new drop links too.
And as I have this week off work
I'm STILL waiting for my Z3 steering rack to arrive - bought on Ebay 2 weeks ago!
Might have another go at finding the cause of my very annoying rattle that I have when the engine is warmed up.
I'll keep you updated as I go.

yes it did take a while, but well worth it
how did you get on with the brakes?

Thanks, glad you thought so!professormatt wrote:yes it did take a while, but well worth it![]()
how did you get on with the brakes?
Aah, yes. The brakes!
What brakes!
They are still a bit of an issue!
I bought a pair of 740i calipers as I was going for the Audi TT 312mm disc conversion but I have (probably) decided to keep my 15"BBS instead of my 17" wheels. Mainly because of the weight difference in the wheels and for me the car is stiff enough for road use and I think 17's and low profile tyres might make it drive horribly. Shame because I do like the look of them.

So when I get the money I might go for a set of 280mm discs and four piston calipers.
I might also get some stiffer engine mounts as my crank pulley has already touched the radiator under heavy braking!
The brake pedal does need a good hard shove, as I'm using the Golf GTI mk1 servo, but I'm used to it so that aspect isn't a problem.

do you think i could i get away with using the standard brake servo on my m30 conversion with willwood 4pot's?
do you think i could i get away with using the standard brake servo on my m30 conversion with willwood 4pot's?
I didn't realise you were doing/have done an M30 conversion too!
Have you got a thread going on it?
A standard servo should be ok with Willwood 4-pots.
It is very tight to the M30 inlet manifold and heater hoses though, that's why I used the Golf servo. But there are other ways arund it that I haven't tried myself.

Believe me - I'm no mechanical expert, just mucked around with a lot of old cars for the last 14 years!
What turbos are you going to use?
That would be an awsome engine!
Have you read through Toby Unna's 335 turbo thread?
Well worth a read that one.

I've had a busy day!

Fitted my front H&R anti-roll bar, new wishbones, Polyflex eccentric bushes, drop links and strut top mounts.
I also had a slight mishap
Not road-tested properly yet as I still have to sort the rear roll bar links and brackets but it felt good, with no clonks or squeaks! Well it flippin' well should do now!
It's just my spine that's creaking and knocking tonight!

have you considered chopping one pulley section off the crank pulley to give more clearance to the rad?
my crank damper came loose on my old engine (because i didn't put it on properly i'd imagine

I have thought of chopping the end pulley section off - I believe it's for the air-con.
Gareth has done it on his 335i too.
Could be another job added to this weeks list!
