The flappy bit is the heat shield(s) which protects the plug leads from the heat of the exhaust. they are part of the gasket that seals the manifold to head. The exahust gasket is relatively easy to change.

It is if none of the studs break!!old_skool_2002 wrote:. The exahust gasket is relatively easy to change.
Tread very carefully if you attempt to do this. Use plenty of WD40 on the nuts over a day or so, and be very, very careful not to break a stud off. Good idea to replace all the studs and nuts with new when it's off.
I've been running a 318 M40 without a trace of the heatshields left for about four years, and it hasn't damaged the leads yet.
If there's no other reason to remove the manifold, I would leave well alone.

Ditto the above. I ran my first 325i for ages without this heatshield with no adverse effects. You're opening a can of worms pissing about with the exhaust manifold if its not actually blowing. You could wrap the HT lead bar in exhaust bandage ( not the gun gum type but the proper heatshielding stuff ) but IMO there is both no point and would look gash. Up to you
