Best speaker <10" for bass

I'm in the process of re-thinking my stereo setup at the mo... Got a new headunit, so I figured I might as well sort the whole lot at the same time.

My main issue is that in a cab, you have to have quite a hefty sub/box to get a decent amount of bass into the cabin & the boot ain't exactly huge to start with! My current Infinity 12" in a ported box sounds ok (I'm just after decent sounds here - nothing excessive), but I'm sure I could find a better solution. I reckon that leaves me with whatever I can get in the cabin itself. I could make some builds for 6.5" speakers in the rear quarters easily enough, or even an 8" sub in one side (where the hood cover release isn't!). Could probably fit some 6x9s in either side too (but I've always thought they were a bit $hite tbh!).

So what does anyone reckon is my best option? Know of some decent 6.5s that can reproduce lower frequencies well? Or some decent 6x9s if such a thing exists? Or is the 8" sub gonna be the way forward?

Thoughs on a postcard, or just posts on here'd do...

kenwood do 6x9 subs, they come with an amplifier too!!!!!! i fitted them in a new mini before cos they have 6x9s standard in the rear quarters, sounded awesome!

Hmmm... Apparently Genesis do a 6x9 sub too.

Are the Kenwoods designed to be run free-air or if not, what kind of enclosure size is needed? Did you seal the area up that they were running in?

you have a convertible what you want is a nice set of 5/14 inch componenets in the front and the same i the rear
a nice 4 channel amp to power them all
and a mono amp to power a Nice 12 inch sub

ive got a 10" in a box that i had made that goes under the roof compartment in the boot so ive still got a bit of boot left and it sounds ok ish, where as a 12" i dont think would fit under there in a box as it is a very tight fit now

I'm sure I could build a box that'd let me fit my current sub in better, but I still don't want to have to take it out every time I want to sling bikes/suitcases/golf clubs in the boot...

Hence the thoughts on what I can fit in the cabin itself. I'm not really bothered about loads of bass, but I definately want more than what 5 1/4s can offer...

A kicker 8inch L7 solobaric has 900W RMS!!!

Only cost 109quid on ebay unboxed.

they use up very very little room, and punch like tyson....

mines got similar to fowlers, a four channel amp running front 5 1/4 with tweeter, rear i think are 4 1/2 with tweeters and a mono amp running two 10 inch subs in a box just wedged in under the roof compartment. it sound ok, but in debatting trying something different, not sure what yet though. let us know what u decide on doing if anything...

Subs in the rear panels doesn't work. I made some fiberglass pods once and there just isn't enough space behind there.

6.5" speakers won't give good sub bass, but would sound good though with a sub, so try two in each door

I'd be very interested to see any pics (or just more explanation!) of what you tried in the rear quarters...

How much room is there? is there any space in the lower part of the rear door card, below where the arm rest sticks out? Considering trying some of these 6x9 genesis subs, or just some 6.5s that are designed to be more of a bass speaker.

Have you got 6.5s in the front? I've heard that they go in to the standard kick panel with only minor persuasion on a cab...

As I said it won't work! I used some 10" subs that I even tried installing backwards to maximise the air space but it didn't work Don't bother with it, you are just wasting your time as they sounded strangled and I couldn't turn them up. They also took up quite a bit of room aswell. Soz no pics, but they did look smart and everyone who seen the was impressed.

This has got to be the best idea, just in the planning stage at the minute. If it works there will be virtually no loss of sound from the speaker going into the boot

this is poss a very stupid queston but has anyone done any research into puttin a sub in the rear firewall behind the rear seat??? its poss a stupid idea and i have no idea how you could seal off the front and rear of the firewalls. just a passing thought...

There's gotta be room for more than a 5 1/4 though hasn't there? Even if it's only a case of making room for some 6.5s, it'd be progress...

6.5" speakers could be put in the back but it isn't gonna be worth it. You'd be better off with two or more pairs of speakers in the front doors

I'll be running a port from the boot which will come out where the rear seatbelt holder normally goes.

The only problems are: finding a sub which will work with this design (harder than you think) and with the port in that place and with the roof down there will be pressure going into the box

Personally i'd go for 2decent 12 inch subs pioneer or Kicker and trust me you will get serious bassline but it all depends what amp and wiring you use for your subs. I use 2 gauge power and earth straight from the battery to the amp and it holds the current nicely and i use 10 gauge speaker wire fro my subs

hi all,
when i did my install, i used 2 x 10" 600 watt kenwoods in the boot, and mounted one in the back of the box (towards the car seats) and the other in the front of the box facing the rear of the car all powered from a 1800 watt kenwood amp... I've got a port through the middle of the rear seat to try and help get some bass into the cabin but it doesnt really help matters to be honest... the problem is that the rear seats just muffle all of the bass, not to mention all of the metal its gotta pass through. i think i'm gonna stick another 10" sub in the HUGE passinger foot well, and mount the amp in the glove box... plus, the power cable for the amp would go straight though the bulk head and onto the battery... I've stuck with my infinity components for the time being and they honstly seem to be well up to the task not to mention the fact that in the rear quarters its mega tight in there n e way... If i was you, i'd avoid the 6x9's, just because of the head aches caused by fitting them, and go for the 8"... you know it makes sense!!

i think i'm gonna stick another 10" sub in the HUGE passinger foot well, and mount the amp in the glove box...

I'll be very interested to see how you get on with that! Got to be worth looking at, even if there's only room for an 8" sub there...

space might be an issue with a 10", but i'll use one of my other 10"'s as a guide before i get too carried away, the 8" option will definatly go though... Surly someone else must have come up with this before? It just seems like such a waste of space up there, unless of course you are lucky enough to have a 6" 4 supermodel girlfriend

Ring Prestige Audio in Rickmansworth and ask to speak to Chris Knight. He will give you bullshit free advise. They have done more quality installs than most people and have very experianced people working for them. They will have tried about every produst going so they can tell you what you want to know.

Just bringing this thread back to life.

I have just purchased an convertible and plan a small install. I have a pair of 5Ws focal base speakers that i was going to install in my M3, but have since sold it. I plan 5.25" focals at the front and looking to build a box split in 2 to fit under the hood in the boot. I have a PG M44 amp to run this set up. If the base is not enough i could always go for 4 5Ws focal speakers. Would i need a capacitor for this size of system?

I see you have some experience in installing in these cars.

In my corrado i ran a 5 speaker set up which sounded awesome, mission front speakers and a 10" caliber in the boot, home made box. The set up sounded awesome.

I don't believe in loads of speakers.

I'm currently running 5.25 alpine components in the front, & a pair of pioneer 6.5" passive ported bass tubes in the rear footwells, all running off amps in the boot. Now that sounds totally pikey, but I can easily sling the tubes in the boot if I need to carry people in the back (very rare), they're a lot smaller than my 12" infinity, & being a lot closer to you, they sound blimmin good IMHO.

The problem with speakers in the boot of a cab, is that there's lots of metalwork & a seat for them to have to get through... I was looking at making a box to fit up under the glovebox for a pair of those focals, but the pioneers came up locally & I'm not sure if I'll bother for the moment! Be very interested to see how you get on...

I can vouch for the quality of the DLS stuff - have used their speakers in a few install before and the sound quality from them is always awesome. Will be using their 8" 3 way component set up front in my touring (when i get round to fitting it!!)
Not actually heard the small sub on that link, but i'm confident it would be good.

Why would you post up a link Tee, you given me whole new ideas for an install in another car!!!!!!!!! And a possible addition to the touring install!!!
I need to hear a set of these running!!!!
