Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction? I can't see any numbers anywhere on the diff on the 325i convertiturd i picked up recently..
I've tried jacking up the rear end of the car and spinning one wheel to see what direction the other goes in... but each wheel just rotates seperately with no effect on the other side! So then I tried jacking up just one side to see if the wheel would turn... it would, but it was quite tough to get it to go round, so I'm still unsure as to whether the car has an LSD or not...
What does the tag that people are always talking about look like? Are the numbers supposed to be engraved into the casing itself?
diff tag location?

Theres always doing a wheel spin.
if you make a number 11 its an lsd.
if you make a number 1 open diff.
i think thats right

I though about that option but then I realised I'd probably better not take the loud, yellow, uninsured, untaxed, unMOT'd car onto the street and then start doing wheelspins and checking the rubber patterns i've left behind. Might just be pushing my luck a wee bit too far there!

As you look at the back of the diff you will see a thin bit of metal hanging from one of the bolts on the right hand side. Whether or not you will be able to decipher what it says is a different matter!

Sounds like an open diff, with sticking/dragging rear brake/handbrake.Alyman wrote: I've tried jacking up the rear end of the car and spinning one wheel to see what direction the other goes in... but each wheel just rotates seperately with no effect on the other side! Alright Fuzzy, just noticed your reply there!
The 318i is back on the road now, I changed all the inlet manifold gaskets to solve an air leak then had it tuned at the Edinburgh Car Tuning Clinic to fix the running rich problem. Still gotta replace the engine mounts, and I think I might need a new downpipe section, but at least it's driveable!
I'll drop out to see ya sometime through the week mate, still got yer number in my phone, so I'll give you a call when i'm en route
Cheers!

Jack the rear up then stick it in gear a turn a rear wheel by hand. The other one will turn aswell. If it turns in the same direction then its a slipper if it goes in the oposite direction then its a standard open diff.
Hope that helps

If you stick it in gear, the opposite wheel will still turn in the opposite direction even if it's a slipper - that's if you can turn it at all.thedingbat wrote:Jack the rear up then stick it in gear a turn a rear wheel by hand. Slipper diff is when both rear wheels turn together with some force with the prop free to turn as well.
