Don't worry about it - it's only used when the car has a cat.

On your car the vent pipe from the fuel tank ends in the open air inside the reinforcement for the left hand front suspension strut.
If it was an emissions equipped version, as well as having a lambda sensor and a cat in the exhaust it would have a carbon canister connected to the end of the vent pipe, with a pipe going from this to the inlet manifold.
(You should also have this pipe hanging off your inlet manifold with a bung in the end.)
On the emissions equipped car there is a solenoid operated valve in this pipe, and your mystery lead is to work this.

Both these come up on the zone about once a week! Why BMW didn't come up with a bung that fits the manifold stub instead of at the end of the pipe is one of life's mysteries.

Quite a bit! I posted the other day that I'd learnt three things about E30s that day that I didn't know before.
Current thing I don't know is why my 325 touring runs fine on LPG, but has developed severe kangaroo tendencies on petrol on part throttle only.
Can't be anything ignition related, as LPG puts much greater demands on the ignition system than petrol.

Nope, Brian won't like me telling you this but he's really an alien spy from a super intelligent world in a galaxy a million light years away. He was sent help dumb ass mere mortals like me to understand German engineering.
