Only way to turn them off is to pull their wires out of the back of the mirror motor assembly.
They are on all the time the ignition switch is in position one or two.

you should be able to wire in a switch so you can turn them off.gilb wrote:any idea how to turn them off as mine get so hot i cant even touch them!!

Dan, A've just done this real easy and handy for the winter.
I changed the mirrors glass, the mirror loom and the motor units as I noticed they were a differant colour than the standard ones ? but not sure if they are actually diff or not. but hey its working.

They are not present on cars without heated mirrors, but they only go from the black and brown wires at the back of the mirror motor assembly to the mirror glass.
IIRC, they are part of the mirror loom that plugs in behind the triangular covers inside the door, but they can easily be added to a normal loom.

Why didnt they offer heated screens for E30's?
If air-con was available on the options in the late 80's then im sure heated screens could have been aswell

Had a focus company car for a while. I always found the front heated window element really annoying. USeful but very annoying.
