Merc or BMW? No contest.
BMW make cars you can enjoy driving. Mercedes make cars to pose in, cruising around with your arm hanging out the window.
Which sort of car do you want?

The merc is a good solid car- mates dad had one that was hit by an artic whilst on hard shoulder. everyone walked away ok 8O

but it aint a patch on the e34 in terms of a drivers car! get a 3.8m5 in plac of the 2.5 and see what the e34 is capable of!

i had a merc 220 cdi as a company car briefly and it felt better ,smoother to drive and had an overall better feel to the build quality than the bmw 525 i also had a shot in.although after taking it to the limiter on the autobahn when i lived on the german/dutch border the dashboard lit up like a christmas tree with all the flashing warning lights winkeye going by the 2 pics above though the bmw does look the best.

Tell me if you sell it!

Ed... are you serious about moving to a Merc? I think you'll be dissapointed with the performance of a C220 to be honest.

Send me a PM with your details and spec of the E34 if you are fella...

Giles.

Conan... Shhhhh!

My merc is a bloody nice car. I've just got into liking it after a slow start. It's fast, comfortable, handles well and looks really nice. 32mpg on the long (but fast) run up to Scotland... and plenty of power for some fun...

Damn it... why do I want to sell it then?

Dave... you want it? You can have it with pleasure. After we spoke, I thought it was a bit out of your intended price range though dude... :(

That's if it's even going up for sale, price dependant....I'm not one to moan about someone getting somewhere first however! :)

Dunno how much this'd be worth? I think I'd have the BM over a C220 though....Is the BMW worth more or less?

Keep the E34. Much nicer engine, much nicer and well put together car.

If you want a Merc go for a bigger engine like the 280. It ain't slow!

Even the C240 is a nice car to drive.

Ed... I'd be prepared to do a straight swap with my C280 Sport... depending on the spec of your E34.

I would have guessed (and I mean guessed) that the Merc, at the price in your sig, would be worth a bit more than a '96 525i Sport. But this one from the one picture we have does look lovely.

Dave... if the E34 has stuff like leather, cruise, air-con, computer, etc, then it'd be more attractive to me and I'd let the Merc go for less than advertised...

To be honest, I've not even advertised it yet. I've begun to start liking it again after a few niggling problems I had when I first picked it up. I'd be happy to keep it, but I've always fancied a nice looking E34... in fact, I nearly bought a 35k miles N plate 520iSE with unmarked silver leather and ALL the extras (even an electric adjustable steering column, electric rear blind, etc) for Ԛ£2k... but thought the 2.0 would be a bit slow for me...

So... any offers welcome on the 200bhp flying taxi I've currently got!

Chuck it in Autotrader, I imagine you'd get decent wedge for it.

I had an 'individual' N 1996 520i, and it was a touch sluggish, but not terrible. Almost all extras, silver leather, FSH, 160k though, but for Ԛ£1200 with 1 years MoT, and 6 months Tax. Bargain.

So comfortable, and smooth. Looks and feels more like Ԛ£10k than Ԛ£1k. :)

Sorry, modern Mercs are garbage. The number if absolutey rotten example I see on P-R-S plate is unreal - fuck, I've even seen X plate CLK's with big rusty scabs on every panel. Add to that the DFS interiors, nasty petrol engines with all manner of wiring loom issues, clunky manuals..........

..........I would rather have a Ford Mondeo (or a Vectra) than a C Class. A much better quality vehicle (you don't see T reg Mondeos with rotten wings and arches) and not even a third of the price. That last proper Mercedes was probably the W123. Even the much vaunted W124 can be seen in a terrible state with the kind of rust you never see on E34's. Plus Mercs are about as much fun to drive as an F reg Carlton.

There is a nice white 535i SE for pennies and a spectacular M5 touring, i also have a big spec '91 sterling silver 535 sport as debuted at the ace on monday, but it looks like i will be shoving that up Stuey, the ginger scouser !

I've just scoured the 5-series section of Pistonheads and can't find any of the cars you've mentioned.

The M5 is definately there under M5 , the 535 ad is probably being reviewed on account of me making council references in the text and saying i would take a mars bar (kingsize only !) as a pX ! :)
