Intensive Wash Electrics

Removed intensive wash electrics and plumbing from Touring to Saloon and they don't work. Observations:

1. Stalk connection on both cars has 6 wires in, 6 wires out so assume in car loom is ok.

2. Both cars have connection for Intensive wash loom behind left headlamp although Saloon one was a bit dirty since it's never been used.

My thoughts: Having searched previous threads, there is an intensive wash relay? The saloon fuse box is full except for one position (K9) but there are no connections underneath the holes in the fuse box if you see what I mean. Do I have to do something to the fuse box, if so how? I've got the Haynes manual with the wiring diagram and a multimeter

Can anyone help? Pleease! I hate lectrics!

You need to swop the relay from the tourer over, long black one in the fuse box, they might look the same but are different internally....

They don't look quite the same. There are two more pins on the intensive wash one.
AFAIK, the saloon doesn't normally have the socket behind the LH headlamp.
What age is the saloon?

Car manufactured 02/89 according to RealOEM, it's 325i with colour coded bumpers but chrome window surrounds (from South Africa - might make a difference?). Connector behind front headlamp is definitely the same one on both cars and coming from the same place in the wiring loom.

This morning, headlight wash worked on 5th wash with lights on but intensive wash and headlight wipers still didn't work when I push the stalk in - you reckon relay?

The body loom connector behind the LH headlamp should have a grey/white (RH sidelight) wire which tells the "relay" on the washer bottle that the lights are on., and a brown/grey wire which comes from the PS terminal on the wash wipe module in the fusebox, and also goes to the wiper switch.
I asked about the age of the car, because early facelift E30s, in the UK at least, had two similar sockets in this area for "dim dip" driving lights, and it's possible you are using this socket.

You push the right hand stalk towards the steering wheel and the washers/wipers do a 4-5 second wash cycle which mixes whatever you have in the small screenwash tank (usually screenwash!) with the stuff in the main tank (usually water). Of course you can put whatever you like in the tanks for psychedelic effects!

The wires are the the colours you say above. Someone mentioned the long black relay in the fuse box - both the donor car and mine had them in - is it possible that they are different?

Haynes manual says there is an internal wash/wipe control unit for the windscreen wipers anyone know where this is? Might be worth checking out if the stalk I've installed is actually connected to it?

The wash/wipe control unit is the long black "relay" in the fusebox. The one for cars with intensive wash has two extra pins, TS and PS.
You must have the module with these fitted for the intensive wash to work.
If you have Haynes 1948, there's a wiring diagram in there that isn't far out. Connector 10 is the one behind the
LH headlamp.
The supplies to the circuit at the top of the page are: PR = live with sidelights on, and R = live with ignition switch position 1.

Genius, that's the Haynes I've got, I'll have a look when I get back home tomorrow and change the fuse box module over and see if I can't get it working.

NO NO NO. there is no mixing taking place. the intensive wash sprays what is in the intensive bottle for as long as the intensive button is pressed. THEN the normal washer takes over and squirts for a couple of seconds from the big bottle. all the time the wipers have been on since u pressed the intensive button. go out and try it , i know im right

Changed over the wash/wipe module in the fuse box this evening and now the stalk operates the intensive wash cycle. Not sure it's operating the right pump but I can just change around the connections also... not sure the wipers are - they were working before. Otherwise SUCCESS Thanks for the help all!:thumb:

hooooray. all u need to do is go get urself some intensive washer fluid from ur local stealer. i dunno if gsf do anything similar but the genuine stuff works a treat. smells like ur breath after a couple of aftershocks when u press the intensive button tho lol!
