What is everyone's opinion on the scorpian system for the 325i? I have heard that they can lose you power over the original system, has anyone had this experience?

Thanks in advance,

i personally think you lose power but i cant actually prove that without a print out, i think you get a slower take off compaired to the stock system. Also with these systems they tend to be a little throaty... i.e when your doing around 40 mph people really do turn around to see what all the noise is about. Just my 2p mate, been there done that and didnt like it one bit. sebring is by far one of the best e30 exhaust systems but very expensive. if you dont wanna shell out for the sebring, my choice would be stock, every time mate HTH 8)

Lost me low end torque over the standard system on the dyno and in real life on my 2.7.

Internals blow out very fast.

Oguz's scorpion got very loud after the Ring outing.

Once internals have gone the exhaust is no longer efficient. People forget how important the internals are.

They sound really nice whe new but can drone very badly once those internals are out.

On the positive side they fit well and.....and.......errr.......I can't think of anything else! :D

If they were a bit better built internally (there's that word again!) I would sell them.

the internals last longer than some suggest. it is however an aquired taste on the noise front

any car that visits the ring and does 10 laps comes back with a slightly louder exhaust in my experience

Oz's got louder because i told u so!

ive yet to find an exhaust that makes a noticible power increase decrease on the arse dyno on a 325i. 1,2,3bhp difference on a dyno makes no difference

Sorry, should have quoted you told me....

I lost over 10 lb.ft torque low end on the 2.7.

I'm not going to say they are a shit exhaust, there is worse out there. But you could buy a better exhaust.

Sebring are definately a better exhaust but again it's an aquired taste when it comes to the tail pipes.

If Scorpion lasted longer and sounded the same as new for longer I would stick it on the Shop straight away.

Cheers for the input, I will probably put the whole exhaust system on to save any hassle with using a standard centre section. At least it looks and sounds good.

Anybody interested in Scorpion mid and back box connected to BMW front section in exchange for a good condition standard BMW 325i exhaust? winkeye

Just thought I'd ask here since there are some Scorpion supporters? 8)

I've now got a scorpion full system on my 2.7, I had a scorpion back box with a Boysen centre box and it sounded good but a little quiet.

I noticed no difference in power, maybe a tiny bit more midrange torque.

Unfortunately the centre box is quite old and has zero baffle packing left so it gives a terrible booming resonance. I'll be re-packing it soon.

Coupled to a BTB snake manifold it sounds fantastic at full chat, metallic a bit like an M3 CSL.

Cheers,

Iain T

I've always been lead to believe scorpion are the BADGERS NADGERS, I know a guy with e36 325i and scorpion system, He swears by it, I have heard a few people on here slagging them off though. In my opinion i would go for it.

Hi I work at Scorpion and have been talking to Sal, so Im suprised by his comments but hey.
The centre packing burns out on some cars only we have alot of systems running for upto 8 years, still as new some cars blow the packing out within 6 months. we have tried different materials that with stand heat better ie wire woll etc, but the same cars destroy this as well, it is down to collection of heat within the silencer. the front silencer is a resonance box it takes the droan type sound away, by having this box full or empty the system delivers the same power, I have never seen a loss of power slight drop on torque if your running a 2.7, but all cars are different so Im open to comments with proof.
I have the system on my car and I love it, like temple8e30 suggests its a CSL sound, perfect..
And for the purchser there is a lifetime Guarantee so if the front box empties we replace it, :D
I hope this explains a litttle more, Scorpion is still the best selling E30 exhaust Europe wide so a good purchase IMO.

What's the best stuff to re-pack the boxes with ?

A dumb-ass pikey workmate reckons I should fill it with loft insulation

Probably gonna do this next week if all go's to plan

I've had some bad experiences with scorpion, not just the internals, but cracking, my 325i centre box had 5 cracks in different places, and the M3 system also cracked on the centre box, also in a number of different places, sounded awful on the M3 too, had a mettalic buzz at about 4000rpm.

A friend also has a scorpion on his E30 M3, and low and behold, it has recently started blowing, no doubt down to the centre box cracking.

Mine has a full scorpion system, it was on it when I bought the car. It developed a really strange high pitched howling sound from the exhaust, which turned out to be the centre box being empty.

I took it to Tube Torque in Macclesfield, who custom make stainless exhausts and in the past have made systems for people like the Toyota Europe rally team. They opened the middle box and al that was left of the substrate was a few little wisps of wire wool. They re-packed it with a ceramic based fibre and welded it back up. The sound was sorted, but it generated a horrendous vibration at certain revs, so they binned it and made another from scratch. The stainless they used was of a far higher quality than the scorpion (though the scorpion wasn't too bad in that respect) and I now have a silencer that sounds nice and deep and meaty, but not ridiculously loud, that i fully expect to last for ages.

Just my 2p, but I'm not sure I would buy a new scorpion based on my own experience of them.

Hi Iain Loft insulation would not last long you would be better to buy a roll of wire woll stainless if you can get it.

Like I said above some cars repeatedly burn the front box out, we use a special material that will withstand high constant temperature, for this material to break down temperatures have exceeded 700C.
We always use 304 stainless and 304 welding wire, There is only 1 grade higher for this type of application to use that is not cost effective and does not give a stronger material just a cleaner material it does not dis-colour as 304 does. You could use a thicker material but then this is hard to manipulate.
Again for a box to crack it is over heating. after having a problem if you contact the factory (contact details on the guarantee card) a new up rated box will be sent to you FOC, upon proof of purchase obviously..

We make systems for The RED team Toyota WRC, Prodrive rally cars Peugeot 106 rallye cup, Aston Martin MG when they were in business and a lot more OE systems that you would not think Scorpion would be involved with.

Thanks for reading

After haveing nearly every type of E30 exhaust here expect the Larini the one thing I can say about the Scorpion - it fits by far the best. The tail pipe designs are the best aswell. Would be nice to get an STW tail pipe design done aswell.

The problem always seems to be with the centre resonator as mentioned so many times. If this can be rectified or maybe improved upon then the E30Zone Shop will definately add these to the line up next to Sebring and Supersprint.
