At the moment I'm having problems getting a 1990 320i (which was given to me for free) started! I bought a positive connector for the battery (as there wasn't one on it) and went to wire it up yesterday, but could only find two cables a) Cable going from the battery to the starter motor (I think) b) Cable going from the battery to the fuse board. Both cables when connected power up all the internal electrics, however when I try to start it just makes a clunking sound. These two thin cables have a loop at the ends of them, and seem to be the ones that are wired into the top of the connector (with screws). Comparing it to the 85 320i it seems that I am missing the main (thicker) cable that is connected into the connector and the tightened with a screw!
Any one got any ideas?

Is there not a thick wire going down to the starter? if not sounds like it's missing! The clunking sound could be the starter solenoid clicking over.
Can you push start the car?
Also is there a thick wire attached to the alternator?
