Got a bit brave today , front shock leaking badly decided to do it myself, replacing with Boge gas shock. got the struts off, managed to get the right tool to get the top mount off, to remove the shock from the strut I need to get the nut off ,both bently and haynes show a thin shim sort of thing that you just unscrew with grips , mine seem to have 36 mm nit that is stuck fast , do not have the correct size spaneer so once agin trying to undo it with some grips, do not have a vice so having problems holding strut.have soaked in wd40 overnight.
is the nit supposed to be this tight , do i need to get the correct spanner , any ideas on how 5 can get this off
thanks

You're going to need some more tools to do this job. If you haven't got a vice to hold the strut or can't access one then use two sets of stilsons - one to hold the strut and one on the crown nut. Once you've got them moving they'll come off easily.

Yes they are always very tight. They are fine threaded so take rather a lot of torque to move.

Stilsons need to be at least 18" long to give enough leverage to 'ping' the thread and get it to move. Do you have a friendly neighbourhood plumber? He'll have some stilsons.

If you're in my area then PM me and bring them round.

Big pair of stilson's or plumber's grip's.
You should be able to keep it steady on the floor with your foot!?
I know it's not advised but i've alway's heated the nut a bit to help with the release

Stilsons can chew up the collar quite easily, so go easy!

Stilsons will chew the nut if not operated in the right direction and without the right force and direction. Just take a moment to adjust them and get comfortable with the operation before you get the popeye arms going winkeye

The nut is usually included with the replacement inserts so don't worry abour damaging it. The strut needs handling with a little more care. Get the stilly's out and you'll be smiling come tomorrow night 8)

Bally, can you let me know how you manage this and what tools you get in the end since I am going to be attempting this in November and want to have a heads up if possible, like you I have few tools.

Cheers
