Hold one of the output shafts still and turn the input shaft.
Count how many turns of the input shaft are required to make the output shaft do exactly 20 turns.
Divide the number of turns of the input shaft by 10, and you have your ratio.
If you can't hold the output shaft still, then it's a slipper.
In that case turn the input shaft for 10 turns of both output shafts.

I eventualy got around to pulling the thing out yesterday, its a 3.64 slipper that needs an oil change for sure.
I never made sense of the tag (nor the main dealer) but Scott325se said you can divide one half of the number by the other or something and it would give the ratio  (it was easier to just turn the thing)
He also said that its a replacement diff from the original on the car, which would explain the strange tag.
If someone wants to make sense of some more numbers you could explain these to me

the 'S25' is the amount of lockup in percent. 25% for road use, then 40% road/track. 75% tyre shredding loony and so on.

The rest of the numbers are batch codes, Part I.d.s and other useless information.

Your tag reads 1140A5134S - 40 / 11= 3.64, S for selective.

Cheers, i was wondering about the other numbers because i'd heard there are two different type's of lsd.
The old clutch pack type and a newer one that works another way :? but i don't know what it is or how it works so i'm being optomistic now and wondering if its the newer type as its a replacement.

Any idea on the one I'm looking at getting then? 1147a5780s apparently :? The guy then checked with BMW & they said the first 3 digits were 147.

47/11 gives a ratio of 4.27 though, which I've never heard of...
Guess I'll just get him to work it out manually!

My 318i touring had a 4.27 diff (open).

I will have a look at the tag when I get home, but I think it will be too rusty to read.
