What an open ended question. It all depends what your willing to spend! There are so many different things you could do, its almost endless. To list a few:

-Chip
-Cam
-Flow head
-Upgrade manifold's
-Larger TB
-Individual TB's
-Water injection
-Upgrade AFM

the list goes on...

I would say a decent estimate for what most people do, would be around 180bhp - 200bhp. <NOW COMES THE ARGUMENTS  >

Never understood the whole water injection thing.

OK if you're using it to take heat out of a pressurised charge, but then it MASSIVELY reduces power, so what's the point?

I reckon copying what everyone else does is a good way to go, so individual TBs a-la M3 etc, an engine management system that can be programmed for the setup.

Then there's bigger valves, porting, increasing the CR.

After that, you need to look at ways of safely increasing the rev limit which would mean stronger big-end bolts at the very least, and after that, stronger rods and pistons and possibly even a stronger crank.

You could easily spend the same money making a N/A engine as powerful as a pressurecharged engine, and still not be as quick as you'll be lacking the torque / torque spread :(

Ever notice your car goes better on a foggy/damp day. Thats due to moisture in the air.

Water injection works by injecting water vapor into the cylinder just before ignition. The water turns to steam, therefore expanding, leading to more bang for your bucks

If you want more rpm and a stonger engine go with Titanium rods and pistons :D . Last time I checked rods were AUD$4100 8O . And with the increased rpm you might want the Titanium valves and retainers AUD$3800 8O .

I don't see why you couldn't get close to the same power as a 2.5L S14 with unlimited budget? What were they, about 240hp? And 300hp in race form? You would be missing a camshaft though (SOHC).

The M20 isn't an engine I would be putting a heap of money into though with SOHC and a slightly older design. The E36 engine (M50 or 52?) might be better for ultimate power from a 2.5.

Aston

NOTE: the prices weren't E30 specific but for custom made parts from Crower (I think).
