I took my car for an MOT last weekend at a friends garage and he pointed out that i had a couple of serious things wrong with the car, like a cracked wish bone. As a result the car was driving like a dog cause you could feel the steering wheel shaking when you hit 30mph. I booked her into the garage to have it done immediatley and i picked her up lastnight. I was driving back about 7 and i had to stop at some lights with 2 lanes and a nice strech of road after the lights. The lane i was in was for traffic going straight or turning left and the right hand lane was for traffic turning right. There was loads of cars in my lane, but nothing in the right lane, so i decided to take the right hand lane and give the car some welly when the lights changed. Partly cause i was in the wrong lane and secondly to see if i could still feel the vibrations in the steering wheel. Lights went amber and i took off. I was soon hitting 70 in a 40 zone when i saw a Police 5 series heading towards me. I hit the breaks and we drove past each other with both of us glancing at one another. I though "Phew, that was a close shave" and continued my journey back home. A couple of miles down the road, i hear the whale of a Police siren. It got louder and louder, till i could eventually see them in my mirrors. I slowed down and pulled over slightly to let them pass, but they wouldn't go past me. They just sat behind me with their siren still going. I carried on for a few meters up the road, before i realised that it was me they were after, so i pulled over compltly at the side of the road. At first i though they were after me becuase i had all my screens on and i was playing a music DVD (You can only use your front screen to display navigation information whilst driving) Anyway, lady copper approaches the window and i get ordered to step out of the car, then it was "Sir, the reason we've stopped you is because a lot of cars like this have been stolen in this area recently and your car came back as being unregistered when we checked it" I'm thinking "A lot of cars like this?" Male copper then approaches and asks for my name. About 2 seconds after i told him my name a voice breaks on his radio saying the car belonged to a Mr Benjamin Lartey. I then take out one of my credit cards and show them. By this time they were happy with who i was, then attension switches to the car "She's a beauty isn't she?" and "You must have spent Ԛ£thousands on her? Suddenly the situation had gone from a major incident by the side of the road with a small crowed gathered and probably thinking "The Police have caught another drug dealing looking dude  " to one of me showing them around the car for about 10 minutes. They also radioed one of their friends who was apparently really into modded cars and is trying to get his car into Max Power and ranted and raved about standing next to the fattest BMW they'd ever seen etc. In the end, they thanked me and sent me on my way. As for not having any road tax, they said not to worry cause they knew i would get one soon   . Just goes to show that some Police officers are proper C@NTS, but most of them are human just like you and i

Must admit, most of the police i meet around Chelmsford are all really nice (well, ok, not REALLY nice) but nice people.

Maybe its because we can talk on their level - unlike the 17 / 18 year old rat boys in saxos etc.

fair cop (pun intended)

don't think you actually need road tax if you're taking it to/back from a designated mot repair booking...

I use to get pulled a lot in my old convertible and it use to drive me mad, so i'd always come out of my car with a bad attitude ranting and raving. It took me a while to realise that my attitude was getting me into trouble more often than not, because they done me for the slightes thing that was wrong with my car or anything they could do me for. As i've got older, i've realised just like you said Dan that the nicer and friendlier you are, the better they respond to you and let you get away with murder sometimes, like the time i got caught doing 130mph on the M25 in my M3. It was 3 in the morning and i was heading back home to Kent after a night on the door. There was nothing on the road and i was giving it some proper welly. I passed the A3/M25 junction and glanced to me left when i caught sight of a Police car coming down the slip road to joing the M25 as well. I totally shat myself cause i knew how fast i was going  . I hit the brakes and slowed down to about 75mph, with this cop car sitting behind me. They didn't pull me for ages, instead they just sat behind me, then eventualy the blue lights came and i thought "Ho well, there goes my lisence and summer" I pulled over and i was again orderd out of the car. Then came the "DO YOU KNOW HOW FAST YOU WERE GOING SIR BIT?" Before i could even open my mouth with my pathetic excuse cop number 2 comes out with "DONT EVEN BOTHER TRYING TO LIE" I decided to come clean and admit i was well over the 100mph mark and pleaded that i would normally never be so irresponsible, but it was 3 in the morning with nothing on the road. I was also really tired and was rushing to get home as i'd fallen asleep before on the M-way and crashed my car car at 70mph into the central reservation. I was told to pop the bonnet and they had a look at my engine, which was highly modded (I bought the car off a mate who raced M3's and had his own garage) In the end because of my niceness, they decided to let me walk with a ticking off. I guess the moral of the sorty is "if you ever get pulled by plod, then be as nice as pie and most of the time you will get away with just a warning, come out with a bad attitude and they will throw the book at ya"

the police are only humans and it's natural to respond like for like - so show them aggression and you'll get the same back.

one tip that really works (i know i've used it) is if you're pulled bring the car to a halt, conspicuously take off your (imaginary if necessary) seatbelt, get out of the car and stand between your car and theirs. smile as they approach.

this is a territory thing - if they have to come up to your window they are on your territory - so they are on edge. if you go up to their car you've invaded their territory - but in the middle you're both on neutral ground and then can start things off in a friendly manner.

Nice one Ben - goes to show doesn't it...

I was always advised to at least get out of the car as then at least they are not talking down to you, if you are fairly tall they may even be looking up to you, as Paul says its a territory thing. I have always found be nice and they are generally nice back !

Always gonna be a few tossers, but think of the amount of twats they have to deal with on a daily basis, and they only have a few minutes to gauge your character too....

Trust Pete to throw a spanner in the works

Placey you're dam right the Police are only humans. One of the biggest kick-offs we've had in my club was between 7 off-duty coppers. Basically, we caught one in the toilet with some bird. He said he was only talking to her, but her man wasn't seeing it that way  We threw them out and he started going on about how it was my fault that the girls man was going to give her a slapping when they got home (Apparently he was one of them woman basshing wan@kers and he looked the part too, but then again if i caught my missus in the toilets at some club with another man, theres no telling what i'd do) Anyway, i proceeded to remind him that it was him that was caught in the toilet with her and not me. He stood by the door for ages ramping on about how he was going to fcuk us all over if we ever come into Richmond where he worked. I really wanted to splap him, but it was not an option, but he tried to pick on some pissed guy walking by with his girlfriend, and his girlfriend lost it (She was drunk too) She smacked him all around the front door. My men wanted to stop her, but i told them not to interfere. Moments later, the rest of his party (All off duty coppers) were thrown out for harrasing the ladies and they congrigated near my front door. I dont know what happend or what was said, but within a few minutes they were all fighting amongst themselves. It was proper mans ding dong too. We watched for a while, then called the local coppers. You should have seen their faces when they relised that they were nicking their own (Some of them high ranking officers  ) Just goes to show that once that uniform comes off they are just as bad as the rest of society :jester:

 Nice stories, makes me feel better about the times I've been pulled over - ever been chased by a DOG VAN? The sod pulled me over (blues and twos on, hammering up behind me!) for overtaking him on a dual carriageway (at 73mph according to my clock - and believe me I knew he was there and was VERY careful, but as he was doing 65 I was getting impatient). Claimed I was doing 78 and gave me a long lecture, etc., etc.

Moral: just tag along behind - except when they are speeding too - got pulled by an unmarked carful of cops who had been doing 90+ on a windey A road - I followed about 600yards back, then came round a corner to find the car in the middle of the road and all four standing around it waiting for me! Another lecture, saying they were 'training' (excuse for breaking law themselves) and that my driving had been 'ragged' (actually I was getting bored as they were pretty slow and I had been pratting around on the corners just to liven things up a bit).

As others have said here, best thing to do is get out of the car, be really nice, plead innocence (if its not too obvious you are at fault), apologise politely, and basically treat them like guys who are doing their job - EVEN IF THEY ARE BEING RIGHT PILLOCKS TO YOU. They need someone to take their frustration out on from time to time, and a bit of grovelling may save you a conviction.

I've lost count the times I've been pulled, but have always found the "ass lick" attitude works best,as someone mention,Placey i think, get out of the car too, always makes a difference IMO.
My "ice breaker" so to speak generally is my name (Roger Cook) most coppers are aware of the no-nonsense investigative reporter from a few years ago and I always used to get the "Where are the cameras" line, and "Are we be investigated?" line, just a little light hearted banter has seen me get away some fairly serious driving offensives in the past!
Mind, that said, the wrong copper on the wrong day saw me in court having my license topped up with "insurance f*ckers"

Yes it is all true , about 5 years ago on the m25 by lakeside i passed at about 150 mph (followed by a 600 merc) an unmarked blue mondeo, it was about 7.00am on a sunday morning. I pulled off for squirt and as i headed for the services this mondeo comes roaring up behind me with a blue light in the grille. It all ended in tears, big solicitor bill (i pleaded not guilty obviously !) community service ,ban etc. I've learn't my lesson (slow down for blue mondeos!) and seldom speed anymore , actually i now drive like a dead cnut !. The car in question was a M5 3.8 touring in brilliant red that had been derestricted and had often seen 270kph+ (170mph+). Coincidentally it turned up on ebay about a month ago, reg no YFF278. I sold it to a victim with a villa in portugal about 3 years ago.

Bootyman, where/what is your club?
Strange how the cops here are so friendly when they pull you over, coming up to the drivers side, asking you to get out of the car etc etc. Back in South Africa we get pulled by two flying squad cars, with bullet proof windows and doors, guns drawn and told to "GET THE F*CK OUT OF THE CAR NOW, OR WE WILL SHOOT!", dogs barking like mad, about to rip our legs off.
And to think our South African cops (flying squad at least) drive m3's and m5's.
Makes me real jealouse. Imagine having an MԚ£ with a spruced up engine, and bullet proof everything. I want one, lights and all. Imagine the fun you could have!!

How many men do you know who would turn down a nice shine or breakfast from a hungry youn lass? I was terrible when i 1st started, but after a while the novolty wears off, then you realise that it's quality and not quantity. Besides i hvae a beautiful lady now, so i just go in and do my job. Still a nice feeling to know the offer is there if you want it though.

yeah I've been chased by a dog van!!

It was in my pre BMW days. I was alot younger and had just received my marching orders from my parents to move out. Needless to say I was not happy.

I had to drive to Weymouth (from Yeovil), the road being nick named "Death Valley". It is a stupendously quick A road with little dual carriageway but lots of straights. Alot of people have lost their lives on it doing silly things!

At the time I owned a mint Audi 80 sport on an "A" plate. Very retro car, murdered Saxos and Boy racers with ease! It had the gold gti engine from the mk2 in it but transversely mounted. It just got the power down quicker than the golf too (which I'd previously owned)

Anyway, I was racing a mate in his astra to Weymouth and had left him miles behind. Overtaking huge lines of cars in my automotive rage. At one point I was stuck behind two grannies poodling along at 40 in a 60 (grrr!!). The road at this point opens up into two lanes up the hill and one coming down it, so I dropped down a gear and prepared to overtake the purple rinse posse!

Just as I started accelerating, the latter granny decided to pull out and slowly overtake (like a caravan going past a truck) which pi$$ed me off further. The road goes into a long sweeping left hander up a hill. I looked up and saw it was clear, shouthed "fcuk it" and went past the pair of them as the grannies were neck and neck.

A cyclist came shooting down the hill, I nipped in with plenty of time to spare but the cyclist may have had to change his underpants!!

That manouver calmed me down and I drove the rest of the distance sedately especially as a dog van had pulled out behind me.

I was watching him in the mirror and noticed he was checking my plates on his radio and told my mates as much.

My mate Dave said, "there's a short cut about a mile up the road, take it and see if he follows you". The orad went from a 30 to a 40, just as I passed the sign I dropped a gear and gunned it up to 40 as quick as possible, just to annoy the Dorset copper. (Dorset traffic coppers are renouned for being completely anal about everything). The juntion approached, I left it as late as possible to make the turn, indicated, changed lanes and shot down the short cut. Very unsuttle!!!

The dog van promptly followed, this time switching his blues and twos on.

After speaking with the muppet for 2 minutes ( I too had previously learned to be calm and polite to coppers) it was easy to see why this blokes partner was a dog!!!

Talk about a$$hole!! He asked where the white astra was that I was racing and I said "sorry, what white astra, theres hundreds on the road!"

We must have passed an off duty copper on the road to Weymouth and radioed the dog van that was waiting for us

He claimed we were seen overtaking numerous cars at high speed, opening doors and shouting abuse at people. I asked how that was all possible at such a "high speed" as to be recogniseable abusing people.

He turned on my mate and said, "you're quiet" and he replied, "well thats because I aint done nothing" The copper mocked him. A couple more coppers turned up. Another buddy in the back of my white audi was frantically texting his brother in the white astra telling him to turn around as the cops were on to him (his car was full of weed and other recreational substances!!).

A young lad came out of the new cop car that had arrived and told me he was going to take my details. He said "don't worry mate, it wont take a second" in a tome which inferred, sorry you had to put up with that wanchor!!!

I got a 7 day wonder for my trouble but the young lad was sound so it was no problem!!

We certainly had a giggle retelling that tale!!

Then there was this other time.....

second that. after learing the ropes of being pulled, they always ask you to turn off the engine and get out etrc. I just hop out and greet them as they're walking to my car. it's the simple things that make all the difference. polite. well spoken but not pompus. lie to make yourself sound better but keep *almost* exactly to the truth. never laugh.

On the laughing thing I almost got caught out. I was coming up to a roundabout ready to straight line it at about 80, as I hit the enterance I saw a copper to my left about to join. followed my at 55 through a 50 zone, pulled me at the end and said "You came out of that roundabout almost sideways" - I had to try *really hard* not to smile. just came out with some crap about how it didn't feel that fast but I honestly wasn't looking. I guess I was driving a bit fast on reflection.

they had a right good look over the car though.

Thats true

got pulled for doing 80 on the bypass near me by a panda. they pulled me as i came off to drop the misses home, so i got out and greated them smiling when the one aske ifi knew how fast i was going. Told them 70/80 ish when he said they followed me for 2 miles at 80 and why didnt i see them.
I politly replied that when you travelling in the dark and all you can see is headlights behind you get sudendly close that you cant tell who it was and as no other traffic about and you was on my bumper i decided to stay at 80 but you had plenty of warning of my ntentions at the roundabout and pulled over as soon as it was safe to do so on the estate.
The other one then said ok but it was a traffic car hed have booked your for that so if you want to lose your liceence then keep doing it. I said nothing to this. His partner then said i pulled you 2 weeks ago and let me on my way.

I think the driver was trying to push me to see how far i would go but i stuck to a steady speed and then didnt give them an atitude.
