Havibg failed its emission test it looks like i need a cat for my car. i have put an M42 lump in with no cat or lambda. the old M40 lump had both. i still have the M40 exhaust system with cat. But will the centre section with cat in it fit into the M42 system?

What did it fail on? HC? CO? Not having a cat?
What age do you need stricter tests for - 1993?

If your car is a J plate it wont need a Cat for the MOT - Aug '92 (K plate) is the date for that.

The plate must have been changed at some point because the date of manufacture is 30th dec' 1992.
Anyway, i jacked the car up tonight and saw this. definatly a cat?
Sorry about pic. its me phone. mum taken camara on holiday with her!

the emissions depend on the date of manufacture of the engine ...if the engine(not the car ) was produced before aug 1992 the earlier standards apply ...why not put the vin into realoem and it will tell you the date of manufacture but it looks like a cat to me

just a thought though if the car was manufactured after 8/92 it would have to had come with a cat and if you have not connected a lambda probe up it would not work cos......
any way try your vin in this this

If it has a cat it will have a lambda sensor, which plugs into a socket clipped under the battery tray. Check whether there's a plug in the socket.
P.S. That looks like an ordinary front box to me as well.

Brian, your link from another thread must count here too!
http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/reposit ... 2-2002.pdf
If the vehicle is not an exact match to the emissions database (which it will not be considering they never officially built a M42 engined cab) then they should carry out a NON CAT test CO <=0.3.5% HC <=1200ppm
