i have got two nasty noises (maybe related?)
1) when sitting still with the engine at idle, in neutral, with the clutch up. i get a clattering/rattling noise. when revs increase ir the clutch is dipped, this goes. this seems to be from the gearbox area.
2) when moving, if i lift off the throttle most of the way (so i'm just not keeping a steady speed) or if i put the car in neutral (or indeed dip the clutch) i get a speed related knocking. this seems to be propshaft.
can anyone offer any advice? i'm guessing sourcing a new prop and box next time i see them may be worthwhile?!
nasty transmission related noises!!!!

sound to me like your thrust bearings gone on your gearbox m8,and probablly the knocking sounds like the centre bearing on the propshaft

Your first prob is clutch release bearing , lube dried up .
Second is middle bearing on prop , you may find that one of the bolts has worked loose , it happened on a mate of mines car .

Don't know about No1 but No2 sounds like the centre prop bearing. I'm currently replacing all the bushes on my car and when I removed the heatshield to get at the prop I was horrified to see that the rubber on the bearing had torn completely away from the mount
. Definetly worth checking mate

that's fairly conclusive on the prop then! are replacement centre bearings expensive?
with the release bearing, it's behaving in the reverse to normal knackered release bearings... when you push the pedal, it shuts up. let go of the pedal makes it noisy. i've only ever had them do the opposite before. wierd....

Centre prop bearing is Ԛ£18 from GSF have a look at the exhaust bracket that bolts to the tranny, mine was loose and rattled a bit when idling.Check your transmission mounts aswell (Ԛ£4.95), you never know it could be something as simple as that. Good luck
