Dilemma

I just dont know what to do!!!

The wife has just passed her test (about 5 months ago) and she is now driving my car (daily driver) and Ive been using my M3 as a daily driver (better than I thought it would be).

Anyway Ive just got a new job and when I start it, it would mean a 100 mile round trip a day and as my M3 only has 67k on the clock I dont really want to be putting 25k a year on it do I?

Im in 2 minds, I either buy something like a 318iS for the work run or I let Sarah use my M3 to go to work which is only 7 miles away.

Dont really want 3 lots of insurance, tax and MOT but then again I dont want mypride and joy getting car park scuffed.

Buy a third car and use that, if you insure it as a daily driver and the M3 as a weekend car, or get one of those new and shiney multi car policies it won't cost you as much in the long run as reparing the M3.

Now I'm not saying women are bad drivers because statistically they arn't (80% of all stats are made up you know??) but would you let someone who has just passed there test drive a powerfull, expensive RWD car in WINTER! in cold cold icy, snowy yorkshire????

Are there a large number of people that work with your wife?? can she not park the m3 on it's own away from the other (shite) cars?? so as not to get damaged..
Tricky one really, don't think your wife taking the car sounds like the real prob, it's the other peeps who can't drive that are the problem..

We both work for Asda but the one I work at and am going to be working at have much bigger car parks so I can chose my spot away from the store and maybe even take up 2 spots but the one she works at is smaller and the car park is busy from 7am Monday to 10pm Saturday.

99% of me trusts her as my other car isnt slow (although you lot my say its a shite girls car). Its a Hyundai coupe F2 evo with a few bits sorted on it and its kicking out (on last dyno) 172bhp so thats no slouch but the other 25% says dont be daft....snow, ice etc which has already been mentioned.

Buy another car as said above mate, not knocking your wifes driving but if you want to keep it nice, garage it. There are always buses.... 7 miles about 15 mins on the bus....

Thats only thing mate, the bus journey isnt that simple.....its actually an hour and 2 buses!!

Store your m3 away for the winter. Sell the coupe and get 2 reliable runarounds.

my wife used my immaculate Mk1 sport with no worries for a year, but only thing is women (not all debbie etc) see cars as a convinience, where as you see you M3 as an object to be cherished (hence why you dont want miles on it), so my Mk1 sport was ok but the interior was full of junk that overspilled from her handbag etc, this junk pilled up and despite my efforts to get her to clean up she didnt, i cherished that car too and spend my time cleaning hers and my cab, pain in the arse (oh yeah oil and water checks too dont forget), same when i bought the Z3 coupe, also full of junk.... now i got her a durango 4WD so it takes longer for that to fill up so i dont notice and it doesn't bug me as much

moral of the story is get a limited mile policy, buy a cheepo fiesta and let it be hers to run, garage your M3 for winter and use it during summer, you will be amazed at how far 3000 miles goes a year if its a weekend car only used in summer/nice winter days. for daily drive use the hyundai (good fun car by the way, mate had the 6cyl 3.0 (i think??) and gave my 3.0 Z3 coupe a run for its money, shame about the driving wheels though!)

Scooters/small motorbikes are very cheap.I use an old GP125 as a commuter, 100 miles to about Ԛ£7 of fuel....

This may sound daft but my wife cant ride a bike!!! So she wont be getting a scooter.

When she was a kid she lived on a main road so her mum wouldnt let her have a scooter, bike or roller boot!!! Either that or she was poor.

She can only just walk without falling over.

mate simple formula for you (and other mathmagicians out there!)

(winter*yorkshire)=(snow+ice)
(snow+ice)+(m3+rwd)*(inexperienced driver)+(ASDA car park)=Lots of things that could go wrong

At the end of the day though you seem to be the only one reasoning to let her driv it so if you'r that comfortable do it! and use the daily driver again put the miles on that!

Can't you get a store transfer and car share to the same place?

I'll look after the M3 for a while, whilst you work out what is best, but i wouldn't let my wife drive the M3 as a every day car

sorry i can't think of anything worse than driving 7 miles in any car let alone an M3, cars' need to be driven and 7 miles would mean that the engine won't be runnin g at it's optimum temprature creating condensation which won't really burn off

buy her a cheap car to run around in, thats what my hubby has done as i run back and forth to wales a lot and his 320 is only on 76k and we hope to keep it low miles. 3 lots of insurance/tax/mot/servicing is painful though as i am only 24 and hubby's no claims has expires whilst being on my policy

I've been through this exact issue myself, I work 45miles away roundtrip and my misses works about 2 miles away. We both need cars for work, me cos it's too far and her cos she isn't strong enough to lug her stuff to work everyday.

My turbo was a daily for a short while but due to the fact I couldn't resist booting it everytime it was costing me Ԛ£50 a week in fuel. My misses car was due for scrap so we needed another also.

In the end I bought a 91 316i for work ( Ԛ£150 ), parked turbo in garage on a weekend only/limited mile policy, which is really low and bought her a Ԛ£300 shitbox escort.

So now I have cheap fuel, Ԛ£25 a week, she can beat the crap outta the escort ( only has 12 month life anyway ) and my beast comes out at the weekends.

Overall my insurance payments are now 20% more but the money saved in fuel covers that 3 fold.

It's also given me the chance to do so much more work to the turbo as it's not needed for anything other than abusing expensive so called performance cars

As much as I would like to have the turbo as my daily, it just isn't practical, well not until I get that Ԛ£20k a year raise anyway!

woooaaahhhhh mate, my wife filled mine with diesel and she only had it an hour! Run it, park it, but definetly don't share it.
