Ok filled the tank up, cost about Ԛ£47ish and drove my m3 cab from scotland to manchester which is about 240 miles or so, and it almost used to whole tank, bearing in mind i wasnt ripping it, only about 85mph to 95mph most of the way. and i had to fill her up again to come back up. so about 2 tanks Ԛ£90 quids's worth for a round trip (just under 500 miles)
This cant be right can it? and how do i sort it out? whats causing it? one guy says it might be the lamda sensor? another guy tells me its an air leak in my inlet block? and so on.
really crap fuel consumption?

Whatever good points the E30 may have, and we all agree on here that they are many, it's drag coefficient isn't one of them.
If you force a large brick shape through the air at 85 - 95 MPH, then it'll use a lot of energy doing so. Combine that with the fact that fuel efficiency wasn't the highest priority on the engine designers list, then fuel consumption in the low 20s is easily achieved.
I managed to get down to 15 over a whole tank full doing some (illegally) high speed towing about three months ago.

Yes, this is a 2.5litre car that I have sometimes found less economical than a 3.6litre turbo car
the upside benefit is that because tax discs cost money even if you travel 0 miles, using as much petrol as possible reduces the percentage car tax you pay

Decent service is the first thing, including new plugs. Check the colour of them after a couple of weeks.
If it's still overfueling at idle, the first thing to check is the engine ECU coolant temperature sensor, or replace it anyway.

You probally would have checked this already, A week after I got my cab I noticed a stong smell of petrol at junctions. Thought she's running rich, pulled up on drive there's a puddle, started her up again and petrol was spraying out from the fuel line coming away from filter. replaced fuel line problem solved. dont know if this helps.
