and FYI, H&R, KW and all the other systems ARE welded,
they get a stock housing and cut it , then weld on a tube with threads in them ,
that is what they do,

so in your terms these conversions are better?
when its done professionally mate its a tiny bit different than giving a machanic £50 to weld them up for you yeh.. does that sound so fcukin silly?

major companies have their own reputations at risk, and they are machined, tested and all other kinds of stuff, so in theory its done right! I dont care what you do mate, buy the kit, weld it up... i couldnt care two fcuks, I just hope you trust it

i dont think he is...

one thing with coilovers i believe is the need to sometimes reinforce the turret top due to the different way the forces go through it.. i dont know if this applies to the e30 tho

Dead right Jhonno, that's why most e30 coilover kits don't have a rear coilover. They still use a separate damper and just have an adjustable height spring perch.

Front is obviously fine, a Macpherson strut works in the same way as the coilovers do - unles you go crazy with spring poundage in which case you may need to strengthen the strut top metal. The end collars on a strutbrace probably add quite a lot of strength before you need to go down the seam welding plates / triangulating cage bars to them though.

You're getting into competition car stuff though and miles from road/ trackday use. :D

Been reading what Gunni was saying, just got off topic a little I guess!

Adjustable camber would be good, not because I'd be forever adjusting it but I'd want it adjusted to be spot on once probably.

The turret tops may need re-inforcing if your run a top-mount with no softly softly rubber. It's the cylic loading that'll crack the steel (going back to mass damper systems again). The rubber top mounts damp the high energy, high frequency vibrations that'd crack the steel. Of course if you whack a rock hard spring on there you'd more than likely crack them through the sheer force of the pot-holed garbage we have to call roads in this country!!

I've gone off the idea of using adjustable topmounts for reasons above and the added hassle of it. Making top-cups from steel and making them fit std mounts seems a nicer sollution to me.

i'd go along with that.

something i've noticed in my car owning career is that the softer the suspension on a car, the better condition the shell is. the most common example you'll find is the pug 205 & 205 gti. for a given year and milage, a base model will have a nearly mint galvanised shell, a gti will be starting to suffer as the stiff suspension cracks the shell around the bottom rear corners of the door shut / sill area.

Very true. 205 GTIs also crack along the seam from the top of the B pillar back along and above the rear window. You don't tend to see this cracking on non-GTIs.

The good Stockhatch racers basically bin their shells after one season and rebuild a new car because the shells get tired and baggy. Luckily 205 shells are 10 a penny. :D

I've got the K-Mac adjustable top mounts to go on the front of mine but I'm not 100% convinced by them. They do have a urethane part rather than the completely solid roller versions but the quality seems a bit suspect. I'll probably try to build the front up with them and see what I think then. Im going to try and buils a camber gauge with a couple of cheap spirit levels.

oh yeah, forgot about that bit! they crack like nothing else up there!!!

LIDL recently had digital inclinometers / spirit levels in for £20 which would be ideal... they're about on ebay but for more money generally. would make a lovely camber gauge!

This is what a coilover conversion is like,
note that there has nothing been welded
the old perch was removed to allow for easier access to the adjusters
but enough metal allowed to stay to hold up the adjuster sleeve,
With great challenges comes great engineering.

So where did you get them from and how much did they cost ?

What are you using on the rear ?

I'm guessing your E30 will be a bit of a track day biased car ?

The rear is just the same, only the sleeve sits where the spring usually sits, and then the adjusters on the sleeves and the spring on that and the height is adjusted accordingly,

I had a guy make these for me, they will be available for 120pounds + shipping to the UK , I
should have some at my place in 2 days, and info on the shipping on monday.

120pounds not bucks, with the "6 springs you can go as far as 80mm or so,
and those sleeves allow for alot of diffrent springs and height adjustments

And the fitting of these is as straight forward as you make it sound?

Sounds good to me ,Cant really go wrong for that kind of money i suppose.

What is all included with this kit? does it come with fitting instructions?

Those pics show front and rear springs but disregard the spring hats on the rear springs, they are not used,

A group buy can be considered, but how many would particepate?

no welding needed mate, you will need uprated shocks, as in -----> shocks that you normally buy with lowering kit, shockers that have a shorter rod inside them so that they dont bottom out every time you hit a bump or sleeping police man if you go too low, you get me?

i only need the rears! lol also need them to be able to sit as high as possible, cos im half way their and the cars lowered about 60 mm with half the wieght i plan on putting in on mtech shocks and springs.. so hmm.. lol

cheers anyway dude!! not ruleing these out compleatly.. but just need to get my arse in gear and research them more!

ed interesting, when do you wanna make a move? i wana research other alturnatives first...

my worry is:: that this as standard on some stiff shocks wil lstill be too low, as i cant raise more then what it comes and im guessing it will come with a standard 30mm drop as some coilys do... so instantly - 30,, then add 300+ kgs basically can just about afford to get it down to 60 mm as i know how to handle that! lol

Gunni how much adjustment is there, it drops to 80mm but what is the highest they will go ?

the lowering depends on the engine you have,

but whatever the lowering is the adjustability is 40mmԚ´s front and back,
these are perfect if your shocks are in good working order or you have stiffer ones, worn will only last so much longer with this, also this is not super duty for alot of weight i.e massive stereo on the back, but these have linear spring rate so they are equally as stiff from the beginning while barrel type springs in the back lowering or standard are non linear so they tend to be soft the first inch and then stiffen upp as they compress more then they become as stiff as these

spring rate is not changable,
these springs are 380lbs wich is stiffer then almost all lowering springs,

I just rode in a M40 318i with similar as these and itԚ´s character is awesome,

IԚ´m not sure a group buy is in order until these become more popular.
