I.C.E In A Touring

I'm thinking about a I.C.E upgrade.
Any suggestions for an amp and rear speakers.
I think I read somewhere that Touring side pods can be opened-out to take 13cm speakers. Anyone confirm this?
Alternately, anyone got pics of a rear speaker install not using the standard pods?
Please.... NO giant woofers in boxes. That won't float my boat. Speakers mounted vertically in the side panels could be acceptable though (but not in the storage bin doors).

Any one recommend suitable gear? My budget for this job is Ãƒ”šÃ‚£200 max. and not a penny more.

I've seen some Fusion stuff. Any good???

Try MB Quarts speakers with amp to suit.

I wouldn't bother with rear speakers on that budget (unless your doing it to please people in the back!!)

Deffo be better off spending the money on some decent component speakers to put up front and a small amp to run them.

What head unit have you got?? I'm assuming you'll have a pre-out to feed the amp? Otherwise you'll need one with line level inputs!

Could leave the rears in and just running off the h/u if you really want a bit of rear fill!!

As above really, if you want good sound quality and volume, go for some decent components and amp up front and sod the rears.

i use a bit of fusion kit-its allright....busy with your tourer lately arnt you....good tip get some dynamat for panelling aroung speakers-good stuff around 15-30 at halfrauds for small pack

Get some caliber csc5's for the front, they are a cracking sounding speaker for the money, i've fitted 100s without a complaint.

just chuck a decent 10cm or mod them for 13cm's in the rear for the passengers.

Slight change of plan.....
I've decided to put Infinity Reference 5010CS components in the front, with an amp (probably Infinity or Fusion) in the right-hand storage bin running either the Sony 13cm 2-ways that I'll be taking out the front (if I can make them fit) or some 10cm 2-ways in the rear pods.

Any comments???

BTW, still no answer on the 13cm speakers in standard Touring rear pods question. Anyone got an answer please?

The amp I want is too big to fix to the storage bin liner. Would it be OK fixed securely to the inside of the storage bin lid?

If I'm honest, my rear speakers sound far better than my fronts in my 2-door. Wider clearer sound,more depth and bass. Makes sense as they are firing into open space.

The fronts are decent components but sound how speakers in a dark footwell sound- muffled and crap. SoI can't understand why you say the rears are just for fill when in any E30 I've had, the rears are critical to getting any kind of sound.

Can you explain your thinking there? Mine are not amped but do use very hi-quality cable.

Appreciate any light you can shed on this...

mounted correctly, components should sound the mutts danglies even in e30 footwell, i got 17cms down there,
stu you can fit bigger speakers in the back, they just need to sit higher out of the hole so you'll need some rings to mount them on.

And make sure they are components and not coaxials, you need the tweeter up high, preferably on the a pillar or up on the dash, or mounted on the mirror triangle.

I now hate rear speakers after having some nice systems, it just sounds so wrong, but they do help if you have tosh up front and it is sometimes far easier to mount some rears than it is to mount decent fronts.

It's not particularly "bassy", but I didn't want it to be - that's why I chose 5.25in speakers.

As has been said mate - components up front will sound better - but they need to be mounted well and preferably amped!!!

The sound you get is all in the fitting - it's well worth making an effort - soundproofing, solid mounting points, angle, etc.

Also, music is written to be played in front of you - the sound staging in a well installed system should mean when you close your eyes, you can imagine the artist(s) performing centrally in front of you!! You'll never get that with rear speakers!!!

In what way do your rears sound better?? They go louder before distorting?? More bassy??

I've got a pair of DLS speakers up front in mine at the mo, which i've used in a previous install and they were awesome!!!!! As they are, screwed into the bare metal panels in the footwell with no soundproofing, carpet etc they sound crap - but i know for a fact that this is due to how they're mounted!!
A speaker needs to be mounted securely onto a panel which will not move/vibrate/resonate and the front of the speaker should be sealed from the rear!!

Pop down to your local car audio place - have a word with them and see if they have a demo car - see (hear) what your missing!!!!! When you've heard a proper quality system, you'll know!!!

Some good ideas floating around..

Im currently setting up a sound system in my wagon, I have fitted my new head deck, 5.2Ã¢â‚¬a front components and 4Ã¢â‚¬a rear and had hit a wall as to where to place my two amps Chassis size (W x H x D) 300 x 60 x 334 mm, Unit weight 3.9 kg.

I spent half the day wiring them up under the front seats only to find that they foal the bar that links the slide mechanism side to side.
Being a station wagon I would like to have a system with minimal intrusion into the rear seats and luggage space.

Im thinking about ditching the spare wheel?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This was my install, still enough room to get a 32" tv in the back, and the floor still hinges with the amps attached to get to the spare wheel

I'm going to amp my front Components with a 2-channel Genesis. It will easily fit in the rear storage bin if not behind the trim for the bin. I can't really see the point of having a Touring and then maxing out the entire load bay with ICE - need my space there.

My fronts are mounted on dynamatt'ed sheets and the tweeters in the OEM mirrorpods. But as I said, in my Coupe, the rears just sound better in every way- they are just decent JBL co-ax.

zedone has some original equip speaker holders for a touring, kinda hard to explane, they were part of the orig audio upgrade and are moulded to fit over the rear arches, have wadding in them an everyhing, might be a good way to fit speakers in the orig position but actually have them sound good.
