My mate has just bought a ~2000MY V8 E39 M5.

Beautiful car, very tidy, full history and so on.

But....my mate with his 2.0 Turbo Silvia......went past him from 20mph to 130mph. Shocker.

This was his first night of driving it. But still..... :o

Acceleration in the M5 is awesome, the torque is amazing.

The Silvia has punchy performance, when the turbo spools up, man does it fly.

No need for the 'Yeah, but how long till the Nissan blows up' comments, because I know blah blah. Also 'I'd rather drive the BMW' because 'Nissans are gay' etc etc. I've heard it all before.

Just pointing out that even an M5 can be taken by a 2.0 Turbo Jap Shed. For all your BMW blinkered lot! :D

fair point but the m5 is naturaly aspirated and the rice wagon is turboed up and the very nature of them is that they can be tuned up tp sillyness! so it could go past a m5 if it has been tuned!! tho stick a turbo on the m5 and it would be a very differant story!!!

Yes, I agree with what you are saying.

But, how much would it cost to buy and then on top of that, turbo the M5...

Ԛ£5k vs. Ԛ£20k

The M5 is NA, of course, but it is still regarded as a very quick car!

Two very different cars, but i'm shocked that the jap shed can keep up with the zimmer...

One of my neighbours mates just bought a imported Toyota Starlet, but it's got a turbo on it 8O 1.3 and with a few tweeks, it's hitting about 170 ponies...The chap who own's it paid 6k for it, as he said that it was rare as hens teeth...This same chap had a Focus RS previously, before he, you guessed it....stack'd it!

Oh dear!

I was in the Silvia as we went past, the M5 put out a little puff of black smoke, sat on it's ass and shot forwards, but as soon as the turbo spooled on the Nissan we were on it too, changed gear and pulled along side and edged past.

I genuinely was shocked. I knew the Nissan was quick, but being in the M5 you'd think not much can touch this. But it did!

Judging by the specifications for a standard Slivia pulled off the Net referred to below (hardly M5 beating stuff, not even an E28 let alone an E39) presumably your pal has a non standard car :) . I'm not knocking the Nissan though. In fact I quite like them.

Technical specifications of 1985 Nissan Silvia Turbo ZX;

evostormm...

Sorry, the car is a '94 import. The japanese call the 200sx (in this country) the Silvia. The information you pulled up was the early UK silvia.

This one which is the same as the S14 200sx, puts out over 300bhp, hence the ability to humble some quick machinery! :)

Ahh, that'll explain it :) .
If I had an E39 M5 and one of the old Silvias (whether tuned or not) came by me I'd be asking for my money back :) .

I seem to recall the 200SX was reckoned to have very good handling too in its day.

It does handle well, this one and the other one I've been in (Karans) both have coilovers.

I have driven the one I'm talking about in this thread, and it feels like a mild race car, it's pretty awesome. And the power/noise is just brilliant! It is a true Porsche/Ferrari chaser!

I think my mate was a bit gutted/suprised, but the BMW is a nicer classier place to be, but still!

Indeed Si, I was well impressed.

I will have to seriously pursuade myself to be a passenger in that thing at the 'Ring. I'd love to drive it however. He is a weapon!

Very true Toby.

It must weigh at least 1,600kg.

Just a bit more than me. :)

this is very very true!

my iS seems well nippy (moreso than others of the same) partially due to a lack of interior :D

Power to weight not actually that impressive then. ~220bhp/tonne.

Silvia is about 1200 and at least 300bhp. So at least 250bhp/tonne.

Even my Civic ~170bhp/tonne (Don't bring up torque!!)

I know it's quick but modern Rice doesn't have any appeal at all to me - although a minty, unmolested 300ZX is a nice thing. Sorry, but there is only one Nissan Silvia imo:

The original 1983 Bad Boy. I always liked these - and I could stand a bit of classic Basmati but none of this nineties blandville Long Grain stuff.

But one of these......

MMM, is that a federal spec 240 sx i see i believe they came with the normally aspirated 2.4 donk and not the 1.8 turbo mill like the euro and jap turds, let me just check my september '82 copy of Car + D river which happens to be just next to the toilet, cough........... I am normal :)

Ha, yeah.

The 300zx is quite a machine, or at least it was. But they aren't fast.

Too many flilthy slushboxes come out of Japan. And Automatic cars. *ahem*

Why make the majority of 280bhp turbo'd beasts Auto? :?
