Hi, my first ETA conversion working very well, just got to swap the diffs over now

when swapping from small case (320) to a larger case diff (e28 525 2.93) , to swap over the drive shaft end plates on the diff, do u just undo the retaining bolts on the plates ans pull them straight out and swap them into the bigger diff case, or is there any pre load or shims or measurements to do first?

are they o rings or gaskets on these end plates?

also once swapped over and fitted i believe u have to set up the prop shaft langth and pre load it , how ???
cheers

Drive shaft flanges just pull out and push in. Don't touch any bolts. Oil seals may or may not be happy running on a fresh surface.

Brian,
are you saying i can just pull out the small case flanges out lever or slide hange ?
and fitt these into the big case e28 dif ?, hence keeping the 320 drive shafts etc , this is only a london hack , so will be driven gentaly , and will a small case back plate fit a big case dif ??

I don't think you need to swap the output flanges, there longer on the small case diff.
My understanding is you just swap the rear cover but it will have to be from another large case diff from an e30 because the smaller one has fewer bolts.
There is NO nucleus.

I must learn to read posts more carefully!
To use the 525e medium case diff in an E30 you need to swap over the back cover and output flanges from a medium case (325) E30 diff. Output flanges are held in place by snap rings, and a sharp tap on a couple of appropriately placed levers will pop them out.

Thanks all ,i ve just swapped the drive shaft flanges over , i fitt new seals too , i used a big case e34 to get theflanges from , so now i only need e30 end cover and 325i drive shafts to finish it as the 320 shafts appear small dia mounting
