Hopefully this should help people to have a bit more of an idea of what goes on with a turbo conversion, and you can all see the pain that i'm sure I will be going through if I get things wrong, and hopefully the more experienced people can help me along the way if I get into difficulties.

Story so far: I bought my car from manchester 2 years ago and on the way home after about 20 miles the bigend bearings went, so new engine time. Got engine supplied and fitted for Ԛ£500, then a couple of months later I snapped a rocker causing me to have to remove head to fix and when I snapped the second rocker shortly after I decided it was time for a completely new engine.

The 2.7 was born
I obtained an Eta block for Ԛ£100 and replaced every consumable I could, such as rockers, bearings and oil pump.

Spec.
Mid/Late Eta block 10.2c/r
320i head with 325i valves
Dbilas 282/272 camshaft
BBTB
Megasquirt
Skimmed flywheel
Removal of cat

Not satisfied with this, I have chosen to strap a turbo to the engine for a bit more poke.

Turbo time
Parts so far:
Cosworth turbo
Volvo 960 intercooler
535i Injectors (which I know will need upgrading very soon)
Modified sump pan with oil return feed fitted

The sump I must admit this was alot easier than expected. I just lifted up the car to a reasonable height then undone the engine mounts. Next I undone the little plate under the gearbox and engine to reveal all of the sumpbolts, then removed all of the sump bolts. Next I used the trollyjack to raise the gearbox as high as was needed for the sump to be able to be pulled out without removing the oilpump and then just simply slid the new sump in. From here as you can guess I fitted the sump bolts, lowered the gearbox, bolted up the engine mounts and lowered the car.

Oil line I managed to buy a second hand connector which screws into the oil pressure switch mount, and it also has a place for the original switch to go into. This feed will go into the top of the turbo, at the minute it is going straight back into the sump as the turbo isn't fitted yet.

Intercooler Now this is easy. I bought a Volvo 960 intercooler which happens to fit in front of the coolant radiator. I simply lifted up the car and removed my lower tech2 valance, then and with just a little bit of force just simply pushed the intercooler in behind the front bumper area and made some simple brackets to hold it in place. Pics to follow.

Next I will be getting my local powerflow shop to make me a log manifold to T3 flange adapter, exhaust pipes and charge pipes.

Any comments, tip, hints are welcome :D

Crikey, that's one high compression ratio!

I thought I was hight at 9.7:1 but 10.2:1 is going to severely limit the amount of boost you can run.

Be interested to know how you get on with the cam and a turbo too.

What sort of boost are you planning to run and how much power you hoping for dude? :)

ditto

i woulda thought a stock cam is more suited to f.i than the one you have, also if your fancy a bar of boost in future the cozzy turbo will struggle on your capacity?i only say this as your gonna spend a bit getting downpipe+adapter made to suit you garrett..etc...

also fit some non stretch hg bolts and torque them accordingly or you will get some free mayo!!!!

Yep, as gcorky says, none stretch head bolts is a must dude... (talking from experience here) and you will also need a decomp plate (3mm) with that c/r you have at the moment, thats what mine was, and it ran very well for a little while at 7psi, but as soon as i turned up boost slightly, i got the free mayo!!!!

i got the free mayo!!!!
if only it was free

Chu, the small 0.46 T3( std cossie) will be OK up to 7psi, more with a ported ex housing or 0.63 A/R hotside.

both are forund on cossies, so have a peek up the flange, and see whats what.

Liking the turbo recipe(sp) so far, spec looks kinda familiar :thumb:

Dont forget guys, MR Chu has wisely already gone for MS management :!:

Ant, i thought the cossie turbz was good for 12-13psi? or is chu's a different one to my cossie turbo? but even still, 7psi was good fun!

There are so many versions of a "cossie" turbo about it really all comes down the wheel and housing size.

When you turn it up and it don't go any faster it's time to get a bigger one

Well I was going to start off with low boost just to get me started, something like 4-5psi because I know alot of things need to be upgraded before I can get upto my target of about 8-10psi. I know that I shall be needing bigger injectors, non stretch bolts and a decomp plate atleast, but that will be phase two.

Powerwise to start with my target is about 230-240bhp and after phase two I shall have a target of 280ish bhp

As for the cam, I've had that for a while now and want to see what it's like to use a wild cam with a turbo as it doesn't appear that anyone on here has attemted this yet. In other countries they all say to use atleast a 272 cam, so i'm gonna give it ago and let you folk know how it goes. If it don't work too well i'll just put a normal spec cam in when I do phase two :D

How much power are these injectors good for?

Blingster how did you get on with the decomp plate as you were saying that the belt wouldn't fit?

Yeah... gave me a bit of a headache, as i had to advance the timing by half a tooth... but luckily the m/s can compensate for that... ive now bought myself the 128 tooth belt that is also available.... no probs with gettin that on!, i'd definately advise the decomp plate though mate. Ԛ£190 from feriday engineering you will need a 3mm..

Doh! bad news, I just been to the exhaust place to get a quote for the exhaust pipes and the charge pipes, they are saying Ԛ£200.

Problem is they say they can't make me an adapter for the flipped manifold and if they were to make one it would cost Ԛ£300

What can I do? Where can I get a manifold from for a decent price, i'm on a budget :(

Ԛ£200 aint bad for an exhaust!! as for the adaptor.. Hmmm, dont know, but im sure someone can make one for cheaper than Ԛ£300

isnt a standard cossie t3 able to handle 15psi? or is it different due to the 6 pot and 2.5 litres :?

I'll do it if you can supply me with enough dimensional info and cover the costs of materials :)

WillG http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... ic&t=42211 I'd be happy with something like that. How much would you guestimate that kind of thing would cost?

Or would you be able to do better without much hassle?

Nope, fits RHD, it's the same as the ITG which Gcorky has now, will fit but me thinks oil filter needs moving and no external wastegate provision. Both not too bad to sort. Remote filter kits are quite cheap.

Sure is shiney tho :D

now blingsta....this manifold doesnt go near column ,so lhd or rhd issues affect both.....oil filter fouled...but a quick mod and the housing rotates 180 to face forward....and that it isnt allowing external gate with out a mod.
