Are there any particular areas around the boot which are well known for leaking? anyone had the same problem?

Rear light seals, cured it for me anyway.

Or it could be the boot seal, or if a 2dr, the rear window seals or you might even have a hole underneath and the water is being kicked up when you drive.

I had a small hole just under where the bumper meats the rear quarter panel.. so the corner where the jack is fills with water!

get a mate and a torch to lie in the boot while you run a hose over!

Pull off the entire boot seal rubber and look for corrosion holes.
Check aerial holes
Number plate screws?
Light seals are the most popular I think.

or if your billy no mates, get some flour and a sieve, and put a light (lighter is better easier to clean up!) dusting of flour on the inside where the patches of rain appear.
Then close boot and apply water with hose pipe! Only for about two mins. Then look in the boot for trails in the flour, the trail will lead to the leak! if the water pattern 'just' appears with no trail its leaking from above!
It goes withought saying only hoover up the dry flour and then sponge off the wet flour, and don't use too much also add a little water at a time till the leak shows itself. If you flood the boot you'll just have paste!

Umm just read your last post, and I think you've found the root of the problem right there!
Sounds like light seals and the light are fooked, replace and see how you go then!

Sounds like corrosion under the boot rubber. Mine does exactly the same thing and the lip that the sealing rubber sits on is corroded away in parts - the water gets under the rubber and falls straight through the holes. I have to get around to doing mine as I am tired of taping up the boot before I wash it or if it looks like rain.

New rear light seals seemed to do the trick for my car but make sure that the nuts for the rear lights are tightened up well when refitting.
The rear sunroof drain holes are becoming more of a problem as the cars are getting older but I have found on a few cars where these have rotted away, that the water ends up going down the rear pillar and finding it's way under the rear seat (it can also stain the panel at the back of the boot).

You could also check the rear sunroof drain pipes which empty into each side of the bootwells behind the carpet side covering. If they get dislodged or the outlets get clogged they overflow into the boot.
