So I bit the bullet and went to repair the wiper motor, as set down in the tech article. Great write-up... made the whole job REALLY easy, though I found that it wasn;t necessary to unbolt the motor from the bracket until you had it out, as it all came out in one unit. No problem.
Anyway...
My original problem was that a) 'single' wipe would stop in the position that it was in when you took your finger off, b) 'intermittent' wipe would stop half way through a wipe and you'd have to press the stalk down to manually park it again, and c) when you switched off 'full' wipe, it would stop where ever it was on the screen when you stopped it and you;d have to manually park it again.
So, beavered away with cleaning the disc, lightly rubbing down the inner track as it had corroded a little, and re-greased the whole thing up again. Put it back together, tested it and it was perfect. So put all the covers back on and closed the bonnet.
Tested it again, and it's gone funny again, though this time it's doing something else....
Still got the same problem with 'single' wipe where it stops where you let go of the stalk, but 'intermittent' wipe is now no longer intermittent, it's continuous! It just won't stop until you drop the stalk down, then it just stops on the screen where you stopped it... Aaaargh! So now I have two continuous wipes modes and no intermittent...
What do I do now? Is it the relay...?
Help!
Giles.

I bought a new motor as well, altho i'm sure it wasn't Ԛ£110. I'll have a look for the receipt. Sure it was about Ԛ£75 but that was nearly 3 years ago.

could still be the contacts so the wiper not knowing when to stop. Why dont you swap the motors over between the two e30's on day to find the problem?

Geeman - My car has the exact same problem, so has one of my friends!
I was going to get a motor from the scrappies but knowing my luck they will probably be just as bad.
at Ԛ£110 I am willing to put up with the problem lol

Most E30 wiper motors from a scrappy are knackered, because:
i) E30s have done mega mileage before they reach the scrappy, and
ii) there is a design fault on the E30, that places the wiper motor so that it catches the rain and road dirt.
I have fitted a couple of E30s with wiper motors from Audis I think, (could be VW). The wiper motors were identical, except that they did not suffer from i) and ii) above, and the electrical connections came out of a plastic block under the wiper gearbox which needed the bodywork under the motor "adjusted" slightly to make clearance.
Leads from old E30 motors were cut off and soldered to this block.
