Maybe it's some sort of self levelling system.
Have they followed where the pipes go to...? Might be a good start.

Looks like self leveling as Geeman said, option on the tourings. But rare as.

Self-levelling device did come to my mind, but since it's a 320i Touring, I thought it can't be.

Hi Bharat here are the pictures we took of the self levelling system.Nice to see you and Andy P hope you got home ok.The cars got to go by Thursday so I may have time to take it off but not sure if it works.So when it goes I shall be going from 6 beemers to 5.Not buying any more till the B6 is finished.

Many thanks for the bits - only got back home about 1/2 hour ago - long story
Gorgeous cars you have there - if you run out of space, I'll happily 'look after' one of them
As for the self levelling device, well, it's very unusual, so don't think many here might have seen it, and hardly anyone will know how to test it.
You might as well take it off anyway....
