Will a car fail an MOT if the front ARB is not fitted?

Cheers

depends where you go....some will fail it for being standard equipment that is missing...thats happened to me.

some will pass it as not all cars require an arb.....that happened to me with the same car.

you are probably best to just ask the tester rather than possibly wasting 44 quid.

Thats what I would of thought, but Im sure I read on here someone saying 'if its not there it cant fail'.

Just hoping an MOT tester sees this :D

how come its off? surely if a car was built with one, it would be better having it kept on

The ARB broke so we took it off ages ago and forgot about it - now its MOT time and we dont have another one to replace it with

I would think if they cant fail it because its not there. If it was fitted and was broken then yes.

i am an MOT tester JMC and if its not there i would not fail it BUT my boss once failed a golf MK2 for not having an ARB but passed it after a discussion about not all cars being built with one as the GTI's have but the drivers dont . technically as you say if its not there its not part of the test, if they fail it tell them you are not happy with the decision and will lay a complaint with the MOT and i can guarantee they will pass it as its not worth the hassle for them and they will realize you are not the usual pushover
good luck

Cheers for the reply Kev :thumb:

Its in for MOT on Monday, so we will see what happens. Everything else is all up to scratch so, hopefully the guy will be cool about it, but I guess it depends on the tester and how his day has gone :?

My brother picked the car up this morning and it had failed the MOT

But it only failed on a bit of rust (it is a Ford) and high emissions, no mention of the ARB or lack of it.

Retest on Friday 8)

It should have done if it was built after 1986/87 i think?

Mad as it sounds this is right. the only requirement is that the door can be opened from the outside (safety thing i guess) so if that means reaching through an open window so be it!

when i worked in a garage one bloke brought his camper van in for mot and expected us to climb in through the passenger side! we failed it on inoperable door, broken windscreen (not a chip, badly spider webbed, was definately a fail) brakes almost non existent, emissions high, rusty as F**k underneath.

yet a few days later i spotted it driving round town with the windscreen still the same and obviously no MOT
