Not as in pushing a button or pulling a lever, but you can with an OE spanner.

By completely unscrewing the adjustment nut for the U shaped hook on the bottom of the tailgate that engages with the catch on the body. You need to remove the inner cover on the tailgate to do this.

Can confirm this too. Takes about 5 mins to remove. Once open, you can either unbolt the whole latch mech or access the back of the mech and push(pull) on the little tab at the back of the lock

So by tightening these nuts, will it stop the dreaded rattle?

Combination of tightening this and adjusting the wedges at the sides will produce a totally rattle free tailgate. Only rattle in a BMW should be the tick of the clock and the sound of a straight six.oze30 wrote:

Which wedges??? The ones the dodgey bump stops sit against?? If so, do you just undo and move or...?Brianmoooore wrote:Combination of tightening this and adjusting the wedges at the sides will produce a totally rattle free tailgate. I've spent many an afternoon tweaking the adjustments on my tailgate and still it groans when driving over bumps.oze30 wrote:So by tightening these nuts, will it stop the dreaded rattle?
Can anyone answer me this: when the tailgate is latched, are the threaded rubber bump stops on the tailgate meant to rest TIGHTLY against the plastic wedges on the body? I would assume so...

if they rested TIGHTLY then they wont have any absorption left for any changes in distance..KDS wrote:I've spent many an afternoon tweaking the adjustments on my tailgate and still it groans when driving over bumps.oze30 wrote:So by tightening these nuts, will it stop the dreaded rattle?I've even adjusted the hinge bolts at the top!
