clutch has been fine dont know when it was last replaced but not even close to needing a new one yesterday but this morning its just dropped to the floor. i can still change gear but its a big diffrence. any ideas? maybe theres a broken pin or something that needs replacing rather than the whole clutch any ideas?

Always change both slave and master cylinders at the same time...

No one's yet suggested having a look to see if there's any fluid in the resevoir!

Translucent circular plastic tub with a black cap, in the engine compartment above where your clutch pedal is.

Hi I am curious as to why you should chage both as I changed my slave [not my wife]and all is well. :?:

Because if one has gone, the other won't be far behind.
Fit both and save time and money.
I'm not completely perfect.......there are some bits missing or broken.

To the original point ... if it's the slave cylinder (which normally goes first or so I was told) then mine went in the space of about 1 mile with about 3 or 4 gear changes.

To the second point ... it is best to replace both slave and master at the same time. As I found out about 2 months after the slave went the master followed by failing. Something to do with the pressure on the older seals.

well im sure its one or the other. will try and top up with some dot 4 i have from a recent overhall, but im almost sure it'll do the same in no time at all. is it a diy job to replace the master and slave (i assume theres only one slave not 4?) and are the parts expensive?

If you have proof that one was changed recently then its not so important, but if they are both old and you replace one, the older one will give up 90% of the time within a month or maybe 2.

I was told its because the seals in the older cylinder will be weaker than in the newer cylinder, and so the pressure from the newer cylinder causes the weaker seals to give up. I have no idea how right that is, but its happened on both of my E30s, within a month.

Without looking it up, I'm fairly sure they are cheaper from GSF/ECP. Possibly dealer price is less than Ԛ£90

Considerably more than an hour to do both, and it will have to be bled afterwards. There's another very similar thread running at the moment. Check the "Anyone in Southend ..... " thread.
