Hi there everyone, i'm in the process of taking my engine out (m20) and i remember from the last time i did i that the bell housing bolts that hold the gear box onto the block were a right pain in the arse to get out. I think someone once told me that they used to take it out with the box still connected, so do you think this might be the sensible option? Just wondered how everyone else does it really....
Cheers, Guy.

pull the eng and box together mate, yes you can split them and pull each on their own, but those bolts are a PITA going in, and out

Easy to get the box out with enigne, just have the front of car on ramps or stands so that the box can drop and come out at an angle

I would put a trolley jack under the gearbox cross member, undo the mounts, lower the jack. The engine and box tilt back and give much more room to get at bolts with a socket on a long extension. Be careful though, don't want the box slipping off the jack or anything!

Or lower the car as low as poss so that you can still access the X-member bolts, drop the engine and box onto some wood or something, then lift the front of the car up high and drag the engine out from underneath

It comes out with the gearbox and gearlinkage. The power steering pump pully is mighty close but it will come out as one. Those manuals (Bentley and Haynes) that say the box has to come off first are just bollocks.
