Hi there,
some of you might remember all my questions on the long range fuel tank, wether it can be removed, wether it is or isnt long range. and yep its long range. looking at the diagram of the tank its difficult to figure out how the fuel goes into the vehicle. here's how it works:
here in south africa we have petrol pump attendants.
anyway, after the first click my tank was 3/4 full. there is a 3mm gap on the gauge which seperates the last quarter. this last quarter is for the tank in the boot. looking into the filler neck it appears as if the tank is full.
how it actually works is that the minute you put more petrol into it, gravity actually pushes the extra fuel into the secondary tank. its a finnicky business filling the tank to the max, as the secondary tank takes about 15 - 20 lires, so every 2 or 3 litres you have to check wether the petrol level is rising into the filler neck. when it eventually starts rising is at the point where the secondary tank has filled up.
hope this helps someone.
cheers

I did explain this to you in your original thread
SIMON:
Here in south africa we are spoilt in the way that you simply sit in your car, make the window go down(roll window down isnt right term for leccy windows)
and tell the attendant "fill her up 95 unleaded".
it was only today when the attendant said the veee-hicle was FULL, and i saw the tank is on exactly 3/4 that i got out to investigate. so... LOL the attendant pulled a trash can closer, sat on it, and put more fuel in bit by bit, he was convinced that fuel would come gushing out the filler neck any second. was quite funny.. this is when i advised him to fill up more..
hey come to think of it. me onboard computer MUST be very accurate...as i was on reserve, the light was on.
i filled her 67.5litres, my obc said i could still drive 50odd kilometeres, and at like 8km/litre consumption , this would make for 5 - 7 litres of fuel in the tank still.. bringing my total fillable fuel to 75litres.. or 16.5gallons.
when i filled the tank and saw i put in 67litres, i was still thinking.. my vehicles manual said APPROX 75liters, so i thought im still missing 8 litres. then i remembered that my OBC still said i could go for 50odd km..
anyways.
cheers

Yeah no worries!
I did ask you to check your guage. It should have a white block from 3/4 to full, the 3/4 mark as you found out, is full, but only the normal tank, the remainder is the guage for the extra tank.
And yes, filling the extra tank is a pain in the arse, if you have the time, no problem, in a rush?? forget it!!

am i right in thinking all that hassle of fitting an extra tank, then BMW charging the customer more for an extra tank. then making the extra tank almost as hard to fill as getting a chrystal on the chrystal maze and after all of that you only get about another 40 miles out of your car?
i can sell you a 20ltr jerry can if you'd like?

well.. im an I.T consultant. contract to small to medium businesses.
so i sometimes drive upto 150 - 180miles in a day!
on a 2.5l 6cylinder. if i didnt have that little 4-5gallon tank in the boot i'd have to fill up more frequently.
the problem is im going to be building a kicker soundsystem(sound quality) in the vehicle, so the tank being there just makes it harder to do the install. what makes my life even harder is im installing a rear strut bar too!!
so, wondering where i am going to install my amplifier. as well as a 1.0cu ft subwoofer enclosure which bolts under the rear shelf for the subwoofer... gonna be tricky. especially since i want to provide easy future access to rear shock towers aswell as 2nd tank if need be...
dont wanna have to take out my whole soundsystem just to have my rear shocks replace for example.
cheers

put the amp on the left in the well behind the wheel tub or under the edge of the boot lip
or behind the 3/4 panels in the back of the car
loads of places
how bigs the amp?

hi there.
keep in mind ive got a 4door. not a 2 door.
its a jl audio e4300 amplifier.
was thinking maybe of building a panel on the left side, the panel could have a type of a door. inside this door i would store the JACK and wheel spanner. and on the panel or flush mounted or recessed could be the amplifier, then just run loom from there to the battery on the right hand side.
only thing is i cant go to big, as i'll have to fabricate some sort of lid for the spare wheel. the clearance isnt much.
also the spare wheel will have to be able to go in and out of the boot.
cheers

well if you maybe use some quick connectors for the power and earth connections (simple kettle plug type arrangement would do) for the amp then you could just pop it out when you need access to the boot.
then screw the amp to the box
bit of velcro on the sub base and it will stick to the carpet.

good idea. the subwoofer enclosure though is going to be a permanent bolt on fixture below the rear shelf..
this is so the sub can fire directly into the cabin.
i'll manage something im sure. going to start a indepth thread on the zone once i start the install.
just busy finishing spraypainting my pickup(sound vehicle)... then have to re-assemble it. when it is mobile i can then lay up the e30 for a week or two to do the sound

Extra tank gives you bit more than 40miles on a good drive I can get 400-450 out of both tanks!that you only get about another 40 miles out of your car?
