Hello,

I am looking at getting a touring to use as a competition drift car.

I am just wondering, if this is a good idea, in that is would a touring have a weaker chassis, than a saloon. Becasue the touring doesn't have the rear baulkhead behind the rear passenger seat, has 5-doors, etc. Obciously it would be roll caged, seam welded, strengthened, but its always nicer to start with a solid base.

Cheers.

Mate, from everything ive heard and seen tourings are a lot easier to drift in.The weight distribution means that they dont fishtail as much when you recover from t he drift.

Speak to DaveTouring if you want, hes a nutter in his touring, if its possible with one, i think hes done it

Id actually prefer a touring, LSD and 2.5 engine and your be well away

Think you might struggle to get an off the shelf roll cage for a Touring ?

I think i'd go for a 2dr

Yeah, I have been looking for touring roll cages, but haven't found anyone that sell them yet. I am wondering if a saloon roll cage would fit then just run bars goint to the rear boot floor, to roll cage.

Tourings are just so damn sexy though

Tourings are great for drifting, in my opinion!

I've got a 2.5 engine put in mine, and fitted an LSD a while ago.

It needs a bit more power to be great for dry faster speed drifting, but as far as control for drifting, it's great.

The 50/50 weight distribution is good because it means the car is less twitchy at the back, so smoother drifts are possible.

That's not to say that saloons are bad, Karan drifts brilliantly in his Sport.

There's at least one guy competing in the 'RWD Challenge' (E30 325 rally championship), that's using a Touring. They have a prize for the best 'drift' on pre-arranged corners. 8)

There's discussion about Tourers here, I'm sure they'll help with roll cage advice.

Safety devices have a cage for the touring, the 325 challenge allows all configurations (2/4 door and touring) so they had to develop a cage it's about Ԛ£580

ello fellas.... gotta keep it sideways.. daves car looks da nuts sideways its just hilarious to see that thing drift especially a couple of metres from his rear bumper.

saloons are good, 4 door better, tourers are best having witnessed them myself, dunno bout cabs,... my 2 door is good but thats prob down to suspension setup.. although id say tourers are better.. fat chrome cage would look the nuts too.... but would reduce practicality..

tahnk u for teh praise Dave.. should see the old girl with the new diff i treated her too... its madness...

im kinda being a bit wimpy at the moment, am still in the learning stage and dont really want to bend my E30 cos its too nice

may i just ask where u wanna compete in this UK D1?????

if so is think ud need a serious engine in there just toi help, preferably something revvy, nothing u cna get from the e30 parts list apart from maybe an e30 m3 engine, like julian smith runs in D1, but maybe with mor epower o help in the dry.... mines great with 213hp in the dry in 2nd gear, but its hard in the dry with a stock 25% diff

ull need a welded one to drift proper at high speeds unless u have a high power'd engine

just my thoughts, im just an amateur but this is what ive picked up along the way...

cheers

im not gona be competing in the ukd1 you need a license.. a license i dont have

julian smith had 200sx power in one of his e30's

hes now got a skyline and a e46m3 powered e30

ben broke smith does well enouhg in his stripped out e28 its got 180bhp and welded diff,

the standard diff is a bit lame, ok enough for the basics mind you,

ben in the e28 stil did wwell when he had an open diff, sometimes skill outweighs the car, and lack of power isnt the end of the world just have to commit to the corner more first

is yours a 2.7 conversion to get the 213bhp?

im planning on removing everything from mine to help the old power to weight ratio.

could always buy a kaaz 1.5way diff to help things along a bit :P

haha hey dude i knew it was you dont think many people go around calling themselves dogs danglies!

dude why not buy paz's 318 touring hes selling it for Ԛ£550 unless its already gone.

karan, the kaaz diff has to be ordered from america (i think) and i am 99.9% sure its a direct replacement,

its a 1.5 way so think its 80% lock up on throttle and 40% lockup under braking think they probably about Ԛ£750 expensive but probably worth it as a good diff makes a drift car.. you could always weld up a diff though full lock all the time, not as much flexibility but a damn site cheaper,

or you could have the standard bmw LSD upgraded to a high %lock.

ive clicked on that link but it said site unavailable.

It's around Ԛ£350 to have an LSD diff rebuilt with a four plate conversion and any combination of locking.

Is there anywhere you recommend/know-of who do this? :)

Yes, depending on what ratio you want, it may be possible to get one on a straight 'exchange' basis, if you have an unusual ratio, or a specific CWP you wish to use, it's usually around a two week turnaround. (By appointment)

As previously, it's not necessary to upgrade to a 4 plate kit, but doing so makes the diff more pleasant to use and more durable.

The locking can be adjusted by having the pressure rings machined appropriately which is a DIY job to remove/refit if you're keen.

Approx' 75% locking is as far as it is wise to go, using max locking on 'overrun' brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'lift off oversteer'.

When buying a diff with increased locking, it is wise to find out how this has been acheived imo.

Wow, that sounds pretty damn good.

Adjustable lock up!

Plus they can do whatever ratio you wish?

And this is for 350 pounds exchange?

That's awesome!

Any ideas who does this work?

Dave, I hope I haven't explained this poorly.

It's not adjustable, merely fully flexible for a predetermined setting in either direction.

The ratio is the relationship between power on and over run locking. Your CWP determines the actual diff ratio as usual.

If you're handy with the spanners you can do it yourself with around Ԛ£50 worth of machining to the pressure rings. (Standard 2 plate LSD)

If you want one doing, PM.

This is my 4.45 four plate approx' 75% diff'.

It won't be until Summer, because I'm hopefully chucking in a 3.5 engine.

In which case, I fancy more lockup than standard, and a higher ratio, oh and slightly stronger for the extra power/torque over a standard 2.5.

I currently have a 3.91 Sport LSD......

Would I be required to send off my diff, or could I bring it and straight swap it?

It depends what is about, 3.9 is usually around.

Not even the four plate conversion makes the diff any stronger, it just makes the LSD unit more durable/longer lasting.

These diffs are pretty strong anyway, especially in the higher geared ratios. Anything lower (higher numbered) than 4.45 and the pinions are getting a bit small.

Heat is the main enemy of these diffs as the casing although strong, isn't as big as it could be. (Oil cooler for the really serious drifters 8) )

Wow, diff oil cooler!!

I was thinking about 3.2 or something, because apparently I would need a higher (lower number) ratio for the e34 535i engine...

Dave i'd suggest a 3.64LSD from a pre-face lift Sport for the 335i,3.91 makes 1st gear to short as Toby will tell you.
