I know there is a thread in the technical section showing how to do this but a mate of mine and me did mine last night in exactly 12 mins .......... this is how.

Tools required .......... 2 spanners, grips and 2 people

1. Take the 2 nuts off of the top of the strut in the boot.
2. Without jacking the car up hold the strut with the grips in the gap between the wheel and the arch.
3. Person number two then un-does the nut on the top of the strut. This can be stubborn.
4. Drop the strut through the hole and remove the old mount
5. Fit the new mount.
6. Person number one grabs the rear bumper and lifts the car a couple of inches while person number two manoveurs the strut back into position with the studs coming through the holes into the back of the car.
7. Grips back on the strut and tighten all the nuts.
8. repeat on the other side.

I know this may not be the ideal method but it took us 12 minutes last night and that included removing and re-fitting my rear strut brace too.

This worked for your particular dampers, or you were lucky.
Flaw is in steps 2 and 7. The piece you have the grips on can normally turn independantly of the centre threaded rod that you are unscrewing the nut from.
Still an easy job though. If you unscrew the 19mm bolt at the bottom of the damper, the whole assembly falls off the car.
