Yeah it will work, but the readings will be all wrong.
But the time/date/temp/range will be okay.

I've just looked into the coding plugs for the E30 OBC, although the OBC was never available on the 316i/318i I still have a type code on the list I have here, for just the 318i, probably available in another country.
For the most accurate results a 4-1typ coding plug for a 318is would be the best, but they are expensive from the dealers.
What a load of useless info!

Tried one from an '86 325 (or 323, can't remember) in my 316. 3-9 Type coding plug anyway.
MPH overread by 5-10%. But then again, the speedo could underread by the same. Anyone know if the speed pulse from the diff is taken off the prop shaft or wheel side? Mabye the 4.27 vs 3.64(?) diff ratio could effect this.
MPG was 10 - 20% pessemistic. If the fuel rate signal from the ECU is a voltage rather than a pulse train then this would be an easy fix. Didn't investigate further.
Range was totally incosistant and seemed to max at 270 miles, which is rubbish. Probably a ~60 vs ~50 liter tank thing. Supposedly the trim pot behind the plug cover on the bottom left of the face of the unit tweaks this.
FYI, I even tried adjusting a trim inside the unit itself and it seemed to have no effect whatsoever.
In the end I didn't bother fitting the thing because of the annoying non-celsius temperature readout that you get if you want miles instead of KM. (Is there a way around this?) Also, I'd taken it from a car with front end damage and the temperature sensor loom finished with a bare wire. Wasn't bothered paying dealer money for a sensor with such a dubious benefit overall.
Mabye some day... It does look cool. But so does the analog clock IMO.

Really annoying, hence my wanted post for a 6 button one, the poor mans OBC, but adjustable! 13 button one can't be changedcros wrote:

I'm sure smick(?) wrote something about it being possible before. Couldn't find his post again though.Simon wrote:Really annoying, hence my wanted post for a 6 button one, the poor mans OBC, but adjustable! 13 button one can't be changedcros wrote: In the end I didn't bother fitting the thing because of the annoying non-celsius temperature readout that you get if you want miles instead of KM. It's fully Km's here from next week anyway. Mabye I should get a Km speedo and get used to the whole L/100Km thing. I'd be happy with my celsius readout then!

Forgive my ignorance mate, but where is here?? Just interested! Handy converting to KM's!! If you know of anyone wanting to swop M3 clocks in KM for MPH then let me know!!cros wrote: It's fully Km's here from next week anyway. http://gometric.ie/
Really tempted to get Km clocks now.
Would need a speedo with K=4838 (to match K=7784 on a 4.27 diff in miles). German ebay is probably the only hope - the dealers want nearly 200 pounds for the speedo alone
Suppose I'd need a metric swing-o-meter to match too...

i no where theres a metric set of clocks in a scrap yard near me from south africa so i am told let me no if u want em
Digging up up an old thread: Got a metric cluster. Got an OBC temp sensor. Put it all in and it works great.
Speed reading is bang on within the expected speedo window of error.
Fuel comsumption readout seems fine (vs. expected and econo-guage reading).
Not sure about the range readout. It isn't madly incorrect and can be adjusted though.
Chrome bumber 325i OBC loom & coding plug on an M40 316i.
Best of all is having a celsius temperature readout
The M40 ECU doesn't have the connectors for the code immobliser. Nothing useful lost there though
