Folks, again I know there was a thread on this but I really get no luck with the search :(

What do I have to do to fit the roof clips into my touring. I seem to remember that the headlining would have to come out and some holes be drilled. Could someone tell me in more detail what has to be done so I don't end up with a dog guard but no headlining?

Cheers

As far as I know the mounting points should be present in every touring, it's just a case of feeling around for them. There shouldn't be any need to remove the headlining.

Once you've found the holes you just have to make a small hole in the lining for the screws.

lol, I must be the most useless car mechanic in the world :)

I've just popped out and prodded the roof lining, there seems to be some sort of backing behind the cloth which is totally smooth and maybe some foam between the cloth and the backing. I've been checking that little corner just behind where the ridge goes across the roof between the C pillars and round about... is that about the right sort of area? I just can't seem to find any screw holes at all...

edit: mine's an early facelift 325 on an E plate btw...

Well, I've been looking and I think mine must be the exception to the rule. Thanks for your help but my car seems totally smooth under the cloth in that area. I'll have investigate under the trim this weeked.
Cheers!

I had my headliner redone a few months ago and was surprised how big the cutouts for the roof clips actually are. They're about 2/3 the size of the clip itself--big ugly square holes cut right through the stiff moulded headliner backing. Beyond the cutouts you can plainly see a nut welded into the roof of the car. Because your car doesn't have the openings pre-punched, you'll need to do some cutting (maybe with a drywall saw). Not a very easy or tidy job.

Best to find a fellow Touring owner who can show you exactly where to cut. In the meantime, you could pull away the rubber gasket around the fixed quarter windows. This would give you a little bit of room to squeeze your fingers up behind to feel if the nut is present. If there's no nut, then you've got nothing to attach the clip to!

Is pooch really worth all the trouble? (Of course, he/she is!)

Hmm, thats interesting.. I'd better check to see that the nut is present before I go any further. Dog is worth it, but having clean seats is even better :)
Thanks a lot
