My LSD's had what I'm fairly sure is a noisy input shaft bearing, ever since I fitted it... I should have known that getting it slightly cheaper than usual wasn't gonna pay off.

It locks up fine, has good fluid & a new mcoupe bush fitted, but the noise is starting to p1ss me off...

So what should I do about it? Is changing the bearing myself even an option? How much would the bits be? How much would a garage likely charge? Could I swap the LSD unit over into my old open diff?

Any ideas welcome...

Cheers :thumb:

The parts are Ԛ£80 from BMW but you will need special tools to do the job properly.

Its quite hard to do.

Yes you can, as long as the diff casings are the same size, but I have no idea whats involved.

Notoriously difficult business that, but there are gearbox reconditioning specialists out there who should be able to guarantee their work, maybe worth looking into?might be a bit pricey though.
If it ain't broke..

Andrew, have you done it then?

Anyone else had it done? Just need to work out if it's gonna be cheaper to get it sorted, or just dump it on eBay & get another one...

I had mine reconditioned in Dublin, cost the equivalent of about 250 Stg.the guy replaced the bearings, quietened it down alot, but I think a perfect used one is ultimately more desireable.

Yup ive done one!

I would check to see how the clutch is, before you sell it.

And i would rather change the barings on your own diff than go through the bother of getting another one which is also poo

any chance that the noise your hearing could be the prop bearing??

So what was involved with doing it then? What tools are needed? I'm just trying to work out how much it's worth paying a garage if you see what I mean...

& it certainly still locks up ok... :)

Well it started when I fitted the diff, so I'm fairly sure that's where it's coming from...

Average garage won't be able to do it; you need a specialist.
There's a bit more info in the E21 Haynes manual, but not enough to do the job properly, and there's a French E30 manual which, as far as I can tell with my limited French, details what's involved, but needs the use of some specialist tools

Ta... If it's that specialised, then I guess I won't bother trying myself - buying tools will probably make it at least as expensive anyway, so sod it.

I'll see if I can get a quote from a specialist, but by the sound of things I'll be better off chucking it on eBay (perfect for a track car - still works great!) & finding another. Only have to p1ss around changing diffs once more then, rather than going back to an open diff while I get this one fixed up & then swapping again.
