when i swapped mine the speedo was the only bit that worked so,I extracted it by undoing the four screws behind it and it justs pulls out-transplant in to new binnacle et voila!
If thats not an option then vauxhalls(cough) work by pulling the pin that numbers are on,out from its fixed position, you can then spin the numbers to where you want them. I was going to do this but the speedo transplant is far easier.

318 IS. Sold.
sadly swapping didnt work
i tried but the speedo just wouldnt work in the new cluster
started telling me i was doing 40 at standstill then zero at average speeds

Erm, a 'friend of mine' once had to do this on a golf, but the principal should be the same. Simply a matter of taking the clocks out and clicking the little wheels round with a small pointy thing. Have you ever seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off, maybe try jacking the back of the car up and sticking it reverse for a few hours? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I did the exact thing on mine, basically all you need to do is keep shorting the diff connections together, my dad got a double pole relay and energised the coil by its own normally closed contacts so as the relay energised it cut off its own supply. he connected the diff wires across the other pair of normally closed contacts.
the relay could only pulse fast enough to give a 90mph on the clock so for every hour it was running (all night, as i needed it the next day) it would only put 90 miles on the clock but it worked. There may be other ways of intervrention at the head itelf but this worked for me

Wheels on the E30 counter can be moved by hand easily enough. The mechanism is tough and won't break if you have any mechanical sympathy at all.
First time I've come across anyone wanting to clock a car upwards!!

It's nice to have you're car reading the rigth milage though! even if it is slightly higher than you might like!
