It'll cost you to register, tax and MOT it. You'll need the original country's Registration document with a stamp from your government / licensing agency to prove it's originality. You'll also need a letter from BMW GB to authenticate your car and confirm it's original build date.
Hope this helps.

as its your own car and i assume youve owned it for more than 6 months its a whole lot cheaper to do. you wont have to pay import duty. although i think vat is still payable at 17.5% you also pay vat on the cost of the actual shipping which is naughty. not sure where 'rsa' is but you may find its better to sell your car where it is and buy one over here. cant see that youd be able to ship it for much less than Ԛ£800.. also to keep costs down on shipping you can go RORO (roll on, roll off) its cheaper than putting the car in a container but you are more likley to have valuable parts stolen or damage..(no offence to E30 owners but there aint really any thing worth stealing on them so you'd be ok) that said ive seen containerised cars come loose and had the crap knocked out of them inside the container. im not sure you need to prove the cars age to get it registered over here, i think the cars previous documents will be enough to do that. ive only had to get a car club to prove an age of one vehicle as it had a vin plate missing as it was ex USnavy, still got a Q plate anyway.. of course this is all if you plan on getting it uk registered. i think you can use it for 6 months on its usual plates.. but i may be wrong on that. if you do get the car uk registered you will need to pass a UK mot first this is done on the vin plate as you dont have a registration number at that point. if your car is a left hooker simple things like light beams will need to be changed sometimes some black tape is enough to pass uk tests..
hope this helps

So what's the thinking behind this option? I'm planning on bringing mine back one of these days and would like to keep it as simple as possible.andyp wrote:noooooooo just bring it over here use it for a year take it out the counrty for a day and bring it back, no speeding fines, no parking tickets, no mot required.

The thinking is bad tbh. I'm pretty sure that you only get one month grace before you have to take it off the road and get it imported properly. I drove around for longer when I imported my Fiat Coupe from Germany but looking back that was pretty stupid, and I was lucky because the BFG computer was down at the time
For me, the peace of mind would be well worth the hassle of importing. There are more and more numberplate recognition systems out there now, more cameras, speedcameras and you only need to get caught once.... Driving without insurance (which is what you'd end up doing) is never a good idea.

I insured my 320iS on it's chassis number with Tesco while it was still wearing Portugese plates. No problem there.

Erm... can't bloody remember now!
It had the Portugese test certificate that was stamped by the Portugese officials... (who were from Portugal, if you hadn't guessed!)

i know somebody that has a car over here now and also somebody esle that goes to aces with a motorbike they have to take there car and bike out of the country for a day each year, also insure there vehicles over there is a lot cheaper, guy with the bike pays Ԛ£38.00 a year over there and they wanted Ԛ£1,000 for him to insure over here as we get shafted for everything here as you all know. if i had an address and licence out of this country i would do the same.

only real issue with having a car with non uk plates is if you need a residnts parking permit. in many borough's u have to show registration + insurane at the london address.
oh they have started crushing cars that don't pay congestion charge....including forign plates if persistnt.
