Peter, try Tim Brise, he can custom wind the stock startermotor to provide the extra ooomph you're looking for

Hi Ant,
I've got the early, heavy, large type starter on my car and I'm looking for a smaller, lighter alternative.
This could be just a later motor, or does the M50, M54 type fit and give any weight or power advantage?

M50/52/54 type is a deal smaller, but I doubt it will fit as the flywheels are the wrong tooth pitch on the M20 iirc, been a long while since I had two for comparison, perhaps a kind M50 convertor can provide a pic of the M50/20 flywheel and starter combos for visual comparison, may help answer the burnening question dude

Yes - the later, much smaller, much lighter M20 type from '86-87...........Emotechnik wrote:Hi Ant,

Yours for about Ԛ£20 from any breakers. I throw them away as I've never sold one ever.

Starter motors on a M54, a M50, a M40 and a M20 in my workshop all look the same from the outside (although the pinions may be different). The only motor that looks different (larger) is on a M10.
