Oh yeah - how could I forget!

My first drive of it today in heavy rain and it's halariously easy to get these sideways, ain't it!!! :D
The grunt really helps with low speed drifting! winkeye

I've emailed an order to Sal at www.sales@xsperformance.co.uk

I have asked for details of fueling and timing as I wish to know exactly what is happening to the engine! Not heard back yet, it was two days ago, might give them another email.

I've got a spare ignition coil I could try to eliminate my rough running, but I doubt it's that. Costs nothing to try it tyough.

I got there :D - a little late, about 1:30 and didn't know where or how to get a pass to drive the car round, I was turned away in the car park. And as I don't know what anyone looks like (apart from theo325, saw his car but I didn't see him) I didn't know who to ask. I wandered through the Zone area several times, saw lots of familiar and nice cars though, would have showed mine up anyway! I'm a bit shy too! Too shy even to go near the Autotrader girls!
I was sorry not to meet any of you guys though!

Did talk to the guy in the noisy yellow E30 with the riveted on rear arch repair panels! Fantastic! Really friendly bloke too!
He was running a 220,000 mile M30 engine with a 150bhp shot of nitrous oxide! I saw him do a 12.6 1/4 mile and he said his best was 12.4! Also did the smokiest, and nearly the noisiest drifting ever!

And that flippin' jet car, scares the sh*t out of me every time I see it run!

Got loads of pics, just put them onto my pc, will photobucket and post them if I get time tonight.

My car ran like a bag of sh*t, rough idle, thrashy sound, lack of power, lack of brakes and when I corner very hard left the steering jams! 8O

Good day! But sorry again I didn't meet anyone!

Yeah, nice chap. He was telling me he was thinking of selling it.

What sort of times did you get ?

These are mine, 2 x 14.4 + 2 x 14.5 + 1 x 14.7, trap MPH was 95/96mph

Didn't even bother putting mine down the strip this time, it's not well. That guy in the yellow one told me he thinks the standard chip might not get on with the camshaft and head work etc.

Still sounds very 'tappety' too.

I take it you are referring to a standard 3.5 M30 engine?

I'm trying to source a chip at the moment, I'll let you know when I sort it who, where, how much and any good!

There are others on here with chipped M30's though.

I'd be interested to hear people's experience on this myself!

That not good dude! The engineer made me move mine away - I only had about 3mm clearance and it had rubbed on the steering arm a couple of time round corners - So I cut the manifold pipe about 50mm up from the flange and rotated it around about 30 degrees or so and then rewelded it back on - now I have got 10mm clearance and no problems - should have taken pics but didnt as I did it at 3 o'clock in the morning - I can take a photo of it on the car though - will do that and post it.

I would hate it to lock going around a fast corner!

If there is enough interest I may be able to get a good price on a Group Buy on an Enlarged Throttle Body + Alpina Spec Chip + Air Flow Booster from the local Alpina Dealer that I know. The combination is good for around 30hp and dyno proven. The cost is around 450pound - so not real cheap but it is a quality setup - and if we can get enough of us to buy it I should be able to get it a fair bit cheaper.

So if anyone is interested put the word out with the other M30 guys and I will see what I can do.

Sorry Timg83, just read your post again! Too much

I've got do something with that steering, I know. Took it really easy round the corners on the way home!
I did cut and rotate the manifold pipe too, mayby poly engine mounts might help? I'll have a look in the daylight tomorrow anyway.
I'm using an E36 rack which makes a difference too.

That kit sounds very interesting, but out of my money league at the moment!

Only things I can think of are those things that look like a fan, but are in fact stator blades. The idea is that it spins the air as it enters the throttle body / inlet manifold.

Not sure if they actually work, it must be very dependant on the rest of the intake if it does!

In the process of finding out exactly what the airflow booster is - I think it is a static vane device designed to create turbulent airflow. I am also getting a group buy price just for the Chip.

BLOODY HELL these things haul! I have yet to really test her out but gave her some leash tonight in the wrong place and got my first speeding ticket in it.

Yes, and the police are having a bit of a speed blitz at the moment. It was a highway patrol that got me, he was coming the other way - I seen him turnaround so new I was gone so just pulled over and waited for the music. I had to laugh though, the first thing he said to me was "it goes doesnt it!"

What sort of speed were you doing ?

I had a lucky escape on the motor way on the way back from the Santa pod meet, i had to slow down for my exit junction but i was doing 100-110mph just before then. :nono:

Well I've driven this thing about 500 miles now - and it's terrible!
It's slow (still not sorted the rough running), needs a different final drive ratio (I can spin the wheels in the dry from rest in 2nd gear!), needs a Z3 steering rack (the E36 one still has too many turns for my liking), the rear beam bushes are shot and clonking and it's still a rusty shed! And there are MANY other things still to do.

On the good side - my new chip arrived today, want to get it running a little better first though. Got my CAT1 alarm fitted (a highly efficient wallet emptying experience). The guy who fitted it got his digital camera out when he opened the bonnet!
Been getting good reactions from work colleagues (bonnet has been open at lunch times a lot) and other motorists too! Had a few people ask me what I've done to it in petrol stations and when stopped in traffic!

Just had a few minutes under the bonnet with the engine running listening for my 'tappety' noise with a screwdriverscope!
Seems to be quiet from the cam cover but the fuel rail and injectors sound like a machine gun with a long screwdriver to my ear!
Anyone know if this is normal?
Seems to only get rattly when it's warmed up though, so could be a slight blow in an exhaust downpipe. ?

If you can afford it get it on a reputable RR for a tune/fault finding, could work out cheaper than trying to chase the problem by swapping/changing parts ?

Which diff has it got, 3.91 ?

Yeah, I have pondered the dyno session. Only I don't want to be laughed at when they tell me it's shagged and puts down 85bhp!

Will they be able to accurately tell me what is wrong? I can easily get hold of another afm to try. Still not 100% sure the cam timing isn't a tooth out.
Will fitting the chip now be worth it and make a difference?
The ecu has clearly been opened up before - could that be knackered?

Sorry - many questions in my head at the moment!

Diff is (lsd, of course!) 3.73. With 15" wheels at 3000rpm in 5th gear it's showing 67mph on the speedo.
The torque of the engine should be better exploited with longer gearing I feel!

A decent place is worth spending the money, they can check all sorts of stuff like AFR under load at differant revs, compression check and a leak down test, air leaks, battery/alternator/starter motor test ignition leads/cap/rotor/etc, etc , etc

When i had my old E34 535 the local RR found that the vac line to the fuel reg had perished where it connects under the manifold where you can't see it and the compression figures were a little low due to the piston rings being gummed up due to the short trips i was using the car for, they poured some redex down the spark plug holes and let it soak. The before and after compression figures showed that they had made a 15-20PSI increase on all the cylinders.

After the RR the car felt like it had been chipped, a definate performance increase just by sorting these two little problems.

I'm using a 3.64LSD at the mo and i'm waiting to here back from a chap who might be selling a 3.46LSD.

You are convincing me about getting it on the rollers!
Even though everything on/in my engine - including fuel/vacuum piping is new except the fuel system, afm, throttle body, ecu, HT leads and coil.
Could be anything I suppose!

Thanks for the replies though Andy!
