Help! I need to change all leads and have "found" a plastic ring attached to No4 with a cable which seems to dissapear somewhere under the injectors. This is on a 1988 318i auto.
Anyone know what it is and do I need to replace ?

Cheers.

it is a sensor that goes around the front of the block and connects to a box under the inlet manifold and they are very fiddly to change some m40 engines have them and some do not but you cant go without it

Curious about this one! I've got seven M40s here from E reg to L, and none of them have this sensor fitted, and I can't ever remember seeing one on any M40.
This sensor, which is effectively a cam position sensor, is usually found on M20s though. On these, depending on the Motronic version fitted, it either just provides a signal at the diagnostic socket, in which case it can be left off, or it provides an input to the ECU as well, so that the electronics knows which cylinder is on the firing stroke.
