Having replaced the light-switch as the dash dimmer switch was not working, I managed to replace it with yet another faulty one - well that's what I thought until I tested it.....

It appears not only is there a difference in the loom connector between pre and post face lift, but there also appears to be different variations within the version used on the facelift. (Please see attached image) I am only assuming here, but I don't think they are compatible, therefore go by the part number. Fortunately the 2nd one I acquired from the scrappers worked.

Strange - it was working ok but then failed. I assume the variable resistor that controls the light intensity went open circuit.

My HOT tip of the day, - I managed to prove that it was an earthing issue by tacking the -'ve (ie earth) connector off the back of the rear ashtray bulb holder, and using a bit of wire and two crocodile clips and earthed it down to the earthling bolt under the gear stick gator. This brought the dash lights back up (obviously with no brightness control as it was by-passing the variable resistor).

So in the future I'm going to carry said bit of wire with me so if it fails again I can get the dash lights working temporarily and it only takes 10 seconds to do. It is a real pain in the butt trying to drive with no dash light what so ever.
