Don't think anyone's slagging 4-pots, they have their advantages such as lower weight etc. as people have said, but from an engineering stand point, inline-6 engines are far superior, why is why BMW use them to this day when practically everyone else is whimping out and using V6s.

And did I mention that I6 engines sound great?

What a load of rubbish!

But..as you say
bootyman wrote:Back then i guess they were fantastic, but now in the moddern day, they are dated and way too under powered
Too damn right, you can't say they never made a good engine for the E30 as the car is now 15-20 years old.

They were very proud of the M20, with it's smoothness and refinement, the S14 for it's power (it is a N/A 4 cyl don't forget!) how many road cars do you see with a throttle body for each cylinder?

Got to say, I drove a few 318is's a few years back before deciding on a 325i Sport, and for me, I thought they were rubbish, didn't do anything for me!

yep, never seen a finer boat anchor, and is that a barnacle on your exhaust manifold?

Right, on subject...

who cares what lump the e30 has, they still are amongst the best bangs per buck, smiles per mile cars out there!

Some folks like 6's some like 4's, if we all liked the same things then the e30 zone wouldnt exist!

i tend to agree with simon here

have driven a few IS,s etc and can see they have a place yes but did nothing for me compared to a 6pot

imo they feel to light and far too unpredictably twitchy

steerings far too light
revs seem fast but dnt really seem to get you anywhere

maybe its just me and im missing something but not my cuppa

but as said not everyone likes a 6pot growler so each to there own

I've had the luxury of having a 4 pot and a 6 pot in the same car so i can tell if the handling is any different and i would say that my car handled alot better with the 4 pot and tbh....i miss not having the M40 under the bonnet sometime's as i could show some of the 6 pot's up (yes, believe it or not  ) but i went for the 6 pot for the torque, it is dam quick and sound is pretty dribbling lol but i did have a good sounding exhaust on the 1.8

TBH, if i put the 4 pot back in i would only be moaning that i've gotta put the 6 pot back in cos i've made a mistake

:D I was only joking about the BM never made a decent engine for the E30 ladies. I think we seem to forget that we're talking about technology that's 20 years old in todays market. I dont know much about the 4pot except driving one for a few weeks and i thought it was really nice actually. I prefer 6pots cause i know more about them, and with a little magic, you can transorm them into a fire breathing 2.7 which raises the bar even further. Money permitting though, i think a E36 M3 plant or, a nice V8 or some sort or forced induction is a perfect compliment to the E30 in todays term. Even better still would be a proper twin turbo set up or a quad set up like that nutter Dips has started mentioning winkeye both would cost an arm and a leg, and forget the power output, it would be just magic to pop your bonnet and see the look on peoples faces. Ho well back to reality :( :D

It was a bit of sincere honest friendly advice mate in case this is your first time on a online car forum. I've been using car forums for 5 years and have seen many newbie's do not understand that a culture/spirit develops here and have a tendancy to think they can say/do anything and it doesn't matter. If your a seasoned forum user then I apologise but you did get my back up with your comment.

Both my E30s have standard 14in bottle tops with 165/65 tyres.316 has cheap Tiawain made rubber but the 320/7 has Kumos. No difference in the time to work in the dry,but on a wet road the Kumos are much better. The 6pot sounds and goes better, the 316 runs out of steam at about 65/70,the 6pot just keeps on pulling until sanity kicks in.Therefore tyres are as important as the number of cylinders. Also, you can buy a 320 4 door for a lot less than a 318.....

In E30 terms, ive had 2 1.6 4 pots, a 1.8 4 pot, an E34 525i 6 pot, and now my E30 325i 6 pot. For me, im a slow driver so i never use the power, but just the sheer thrill of a six pot in terms of the sound, smoothness, torque and if you need it the power is just awesome. 6 pot rightness ever time for me
