The current wheels I have on my e30 are 195/60/14 with a rolling dia of 590.

does this mean that I need to try and get me new wheels as close to this figure as possible , but is that possible?

if i go for 205/45/17 this gives me a rolling dia of 616.....

is that difference in figure ( ie 616 as oppossed to 590 ) going to be ok. will this slow my car down due to the increased dia.

cheers

mule
your 195/60/14 tyres are already 'wrong' - they should be 195/65/14 to give rolling diameter of 606... but it doesn't matter; the previous owner has put slightly 'smaller' tyres on - your speedo will read slightly out.

don't forget, new tyres have 7mm of tread depth, therefore once the tyres are bald, your rolling diameter has reduced by nearly 14mm

But you can have rubbing issues if you put 'bigger' tyres on - i.e. the 225/45/17s

the E30 was designed for around 606-609mm, so 616mm won't matter, but as has been said already, the bigger tyres 225/45/17 at 634mm when the car is lowered do rub....

good luck anway getting your money back :D

Another good Tyre which i highly recommend as i have had 2 sets in nearly 3 years is the "Vredestien Sportrac" in 215 40 17 very sticky in the wet and dry, or the Avon ZZ3, very good in the dry but not so much in the wet, but you cant go wrong with the sportrac and they wont cost a bomb

at ET15-18 they'll not be too bad i suspect. they will sit wide in the arch but should clear, just! the tyres will have to be really lot though. a lot of drop won't help things either.

this may help get an idea on things. the following links have my set of 17" alpina replicas. two were ET20 (too far out), two were ET38 (too far in). in all shots, the 215/45/17's were on the front, the 225/45/17's on the rear. (i got the tyres swapped over)

ET20 front, ET38 rear

ET38 front, ET20 rear
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v382/ ... F%20ET20R/

the arch damage was caused by the ET20's on the front :x the front rubbed the arch with the ET20 and needed 3mm spacers with the ET38 to clear the standard caliper and strut casing.
the rear rubbed on both the inside and outside, depending on what was fitted.

this is what 16" alpinas look like on the same car... vastly better and it totally transformed the handling! the 'nasty' pics show what the worst one looked like before i sent them to lepsons for refurbishment. cost me Ԛ£120 for the wheels iirc. then another Ԛ£200 + vat for the refurb.

top info from Gareth

at 7J width your offset should be 25, so your supplier is wrong;
IMHO use Gareths info to get a refund?

then get some 16" wheels :D

wheel supplier aint budging , wont give me a refund........

he says he has sold lots of similar dimentioned wheels for e30 and has had no problems.... well see ,

when i fit the 205 wide tyres on them , ill see how much i can safely lower the car ( this hasnt been done yet ) and if there is still a problem when my car is lowered , he will have it both barrells.

he did say , that if he wheels were et25 , then they would hit the suspension arm and couldnt be sold as being able to fit on a e30....

probably all bullshit , so it looks like im stuck with them fo now...

oh well save up for alpina replica's

cheers

tell him to look at this picture...

Image

ask him why did BMW/BBS make a 7J width wheel in ET24 then?

to damage their own suspension arms obviously

If I remember correctly, something like a Mim wheel is Et12 or 13, so 15 will probably be fine. I'm intrigued as to how he can say they're "15-18"; It'll say a number on the wheel, not a range!

& ET15-18 is even further out for a 306 btw.

well well well this is a turn up......

my wheel supplier has been back on and said to me he isnt willing to sell me the wheels any longer as he doesnt want the potential hassle.......um

i think it is because of the info im now armed with , that , he knows he cant fob me off as he knows the wheels ARE going to be a problem....

right just got to get me money back.

with hindsight , alpina 16 inch replica's are going to be better.

anyone advise a good tyre size for these.

woo-hoo RESULT
Image

those rims were bad bad bad... IMHO

yes; get some 16s

if they are 7J definately get 205/50/16;

if 7.5J some people prefer 215/45?/16s as they reckon 205 doesn't sit nicely on the wider 7.5J rim, but I have 205/50/16s on my 7.5J Hartge rims

Image

or you could get some lovely 15" BBS; these are 205/55/15

Image

ps the wheels on the green car are 205/45/17s

No prob :thumb:

You can go wider (depending on rim width) to say 225/45, (or something like 225/40 if you want to drop the radius a bit) but you may well run into clearance issues.... 205/50 is the safe option! & it won't put your speedo out etc.

Orangecurry

thats a nice cabby..... i wouldnt mind one of those next....

I really have got some work to do on mine...

Ill try and get some piccys done

respray etc...the garage what had it used it as a ..... well god knows what.

I need 2 new rear arches put on.... but the car is worth it , i love it. 123k miles , 2 door white auto , 318i and flew through its mot last year. I havent put one mile on it since the last mot

first beemer ive ever had , and ive got to say , im well impressed with it. Ive done quite abit of work already.

Ive emailed the chap in the pool , but i really must get going to work... hopefully he will come back to me by tonite.

He has said they are 4 stud. good. he has 2 x 205/55 and 2 x 205/50...not sure with the mix of tyre size. 16inch...cosmic....and alpina replica's...jobs a good un. not sure if these will need any kind of additional centre rings though , he says they dont need any additional fitting kit.... but i assume these can be easily got hold of if i do need em.

Ԛ£200.00 with tyres delivered..... good price i think.

i'm running 215/40/16's on 7J16 alpina reps. nice and cheap and they look good too.

oh, as far as i know, there are no variations on the 16" alpina replicas. mine are 7J16 ET28 and i have never seen any other variants until you are talking about real alpinas
