turbo....where do i start?

i have been looking into this for some time and i have been look at the archives of forced induction to try and get some idea how to do this and in time more and more is starting to make sense.

i also have been reading PPC mag and following Toby unna's 335i getting a turbo slapped on, and had another read about Ants turbo in that nice little article in PPC.

all this and a great competition with a best mate who runs a 1998 legacy turbo help me know i need more power! so do i strap a turbo on and see what happens?

-where do i start?
-how much have people been spending?(lets not go crazy we all live on a budget)
-and is this the best way to go? i love turbo power, but lets face it those jap turbo's can look pretty......um...confusing under the bonnet

ok now i find the entire thing with toby unna on here. nice work from me.

but if anyone has good advice or can show me an alternative to power rather than the turbo or engine change...
show me some ideas.
