Un-branded M cars

There are two types of badges;

First is this.......... //M

Second is this........... //M3

First IMO denotes a car with M-Tec bits and pieces,if it hasn't,go join the Nova boys.

Second denotes an M3.

Second badge on first car would make you a twat.

First badge on first car says,I've got a 3 series with some extras.

Second badge says i've got an M3,and it's real.

Well thats my opinion,hence why my Tourer has an //M badge,and i've no intention of removing it

im with this train of thought, however I recently got a slating for suggesting an "M" badge on my 535 sport from another forum, not that it would stop me, but there are some funny buggers about.....

Im with Jesus on this one.I think as long as your cars got Mtech Goodies on it (Preferably a factory sport or IS) then its ok to put an M Badge on the back, i cant see anything wrong with that.

Its when you see people with M3 badges driving around, or 4 dr e36 boys with M3 badges

this annoys me Sports are nothing like standard cars all they share are brakes and engine everything else is different.
As said in Tbmw it's a car that was reworked by the M-power folks.

Does everyone forget the M-tech 2 bodykit is a wind tunnel tested kit that does reduce drag and that spoiler does help downforce at high speeds.

If standard cars are so good why does everyone one add all the sport goodies to theirs?

I can see what's developing here, some of you are mistaking, M technic which is the accesory name given to upgraded components, and M power which is the full monty, Any bm with a chassis number begining WB is not a M machine.

Obviously the boffs at BMW used the M division's expertise for other none M machines but that doesn't make them M cars.


Personally i don't a fcuk what badges someone chooses for their car ,beit Mpower, Alpina, Hartge, etc its a free country.

I also drive an 840 ci which i've bought up to csi spec, so have badged it *

840 csi it doesn't make it a full csi ,just looks like one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worth noting also that in New Zealand, 325 Sports were sold from new as M325i, and are badged as such - otherwise identical to 325 sport, 'cept for no headlamp washers (not much need for them here )

Cos I like the look of the sport front

but i hate the tec 2 spoiler even if it is areo dynamic still looks fugly and too big.
Im not dissing the sport mind.
Id have a sport, the touring, cab and m3 on my drive if i had the cash and the space. Well i got the space dont tthink the neighbours be to happy. Its bad enough with teh touring the braker mates raddo and mobilty corsa taking all the room.

Well my chasis number begins with WB but the last seven digits begin EB....and its definately an E30 M3 cab!! Last seven digits confirmed with BMW.

This is how I understand the M issue,

Pukka motorsport cars, ie E30 M3, E28/E34 M5 were all developed and built by BMW motorsport at their own factory as that was the easiest way to produce what was a relatively low volume product. At some point it became more economical to build M cars on the normal production line as they became more popular. What we have to bear in mind is that a significant portion of a proper M car has been developed by BMW Motorsport, engine, drivetrain, suspension etc and a lot of those components are unique. These cars justifiably wear the M3, M5 badge etc.

Now, as with most car manufacturers these type of cars have a halo effect on the rest of the range and as such some of the developments will filter down in some form or other and this provides a middleground between your standard E30 and an M3 and this is where I believe the M-technic items come in. These are products that are designed to provide in some fashion a link to BMW Motorsport for the everyday BMW driver, whether it be an M-tech 2 bodykit, an M-tech gearknob or M-tech suspension. Now as I have fitted several M-tech items to my touring, on top of it having m-tech suspension as standard, I feel justified in having an M badge on it.

No offence to sport owners, and if I'm wrong please tell me, but I'm sure I've read somewhere that Sports are a UK only version of the 325i that was intended to bridge the gap between the 325i and the M3, and was fitted as standard with an LSD, close ratio gearbox, sports seats and the M-tech 2 kit.

yes the M division had a hand in the sport, but in no way shape or form is it an M car.

850csi is a different matter - handbuilt m engine, full on m suspension, m kit - its def an M car without the badge.


as for ppl who stick //M badges on their e30's well its totally up to them, justify it if u need to but it makes me laugh at the sadness - and sorry but "ive got a few m technic assesories" is no reason (in my eyes) to stick an //M badge on your car.

The E30 M3's were actually built alongside regular E30's at the main factory, and that included the M3 Evo Sports...

When I started this thread, I was in no way insinuating that the Sport was an M car. I have one and I don't believe for a second that it is.

I was trying to say that the Sport, along with various other cars that weren't badged as M cars, were in fact a little bit different because the Motorsport Division had a hand in making them so.

Splash your M badges all over the place, I don't mind, but remember, don't stick an M3 badge on...
